Greenhead info
Submitted by Bodie on Mon, 2013-09-23 11:11
We are heading up to Greenhead for the long weekend, and just chasing a little info on the place, fishing, boat ramp etc?
One bloke i work with said he was up there a week ago and half the boat ramp was closed as it had been damaged by the storms? The boat ramp itself, is it generally a safe easy to use ramp?
Fishing wise, looks fairly easy to go either north or south of the main reef? Any publically known barges etc where some sambo jigging can be done?
Any info anyone has would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Boat Ramp
Was there a couple of weeks ago and 1 side was closed due to heap of weed washed up the ramp.
Have had no issues launching all retrieving from there in good conditions. It's generally a pretty quiet boat ramp. Would not want to retreive on a big swell & howling south westerly as small waves can come through to the ramp.

Ramp is usually pretty
Ramp is usually pretty weeded up after a blow, sometimes on the ramp a 4x4 is a must to launch if it hasn't been cleaned up. Also can get pretty surgy if there is swell around. And when you pull out from the jetty be careful of a very shallow rock just out from the small finger jetty, from memory it's off the end 10m's or so and just to the south of it.
Fishing wise, once your past the main reef there is only one bomby to watch out for, it's a few km's straight out infront, breaks on a 2.5m + swell.
I don't know of any wrecks or sambo congregations out there, but that certainly doesn't mean there arnt any!
With a boat your size I'd be heading out 20mile and hunting around out there, but also some good fish caught in close too, seen kiyaks at the ramp with dhuies a few times.
I might be up there Sunday/Monday if the weather plays the game, might bump into you

Thanks Fellas, Yep will have
Thanks Fellas,
Yep will have 2 x 4WD's so no issues there.
I like the sound of baldy Central, my preferred demersal thats for sure!
Thanks for the tip Paul, will try keep an eye out for it. I assume the rmap is 2 lanes, so can launch from the northern ramp and not have to worry about the rock?
Let me know if your up there and will come say gday.
Weather is looking pretty good for the whole weekend at this point in time.

Bodie just come
back from Green Head. My friend I wouldn't bother. I'm 5' 8" tall and the weed on the ramp (good ramp) was up to my belly buttom, shocking absolutely shocking. Don't think the Council has down any removal of weed for months, as their are weeds growning in the beached weed that is drying. The ramp on the left in GH is closed with concrete blocks, think its also due to the sea wall there that was badly damaged a couple of storms ago plus the pad maybe collapsed as well on that ramp.
Their was a boat out but he launched to the left of the ramps on the beach and then parked car in car park, only one boat out and one boat out also in Leeman.
Ramp at the Sea Rescue in Leeman is good but the Town Ramp next to the Crayfishermans jetty is full of weed but they normally clear (Friday's) it for a long week-end.
JURIEN BAY FORECAST:
- Summary
-
- Min 8
- Max 23
- Mostly sunny.
Central West areaSunny. Light winds becoming west to southwesterly 15 to 20 km/h during the afternoon then tending south to southwesterly during the evening. Overnight temperatures falling to between 5 and 10 with daytime temperatures reaching 23 to 30.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:25 pm WST Wednesday.
Bit early for the wind reports on Sunday or Monday.
The surge is pretty bad at the moment on the ramps and looking out into the channel and reef system, still big waves pounding in GH, weed all around the bay to Point Liouse but looks driveable with 4x4.
Enjoy your time in GH Bodie.

Thanks Roberta, The swell is
Thanks Roberta,
The swell is still over 4.5m up that way at the moment, so hopefully the surge will subside once the swell drops. Saturday its meant to be down to about 2.3m
As for the weed, do you think its possible for us to move the weed off the side of the ramp? Done this many times at Hamelin bay, get a bit dirty but no big deal.

You might be able
to with 4 shovels and plenty of love, sweat and tears, its pretty high and I don't know where you'd put the shoveled weed, maybe on the blocked side of the ramp or over the other non ramp side next to the jetty. It just looks like a minnie cliff of weed and you really sink in up to your knees or further, hope their aren't any of those rotten midgies as you'll come out with millions of bites if so Bodie and maybe on the nose a bit hahaha, bring some calomine lotion if you indend to shovel it out of the way to put on the midgie bites otherwise youwill scratch yourself to death with their spewie bites.
Fingers crossed the Council is going to remove it, that is the question, as only one ramp to launch/retrieve on, if a few boats do venture out on the week end will be a bit congested.

Yep 2 lane ramp, which ever
Yep 2 lane ramp, which ever side you launch on just make sure you swing your boat north off the jetty and you will miss it, if that makes sense. You should be able to see it anyway!
no worries mate ill pm you if I head up, will be Sunday/Monday if I do.
Yeah its shaping up nicely, still a lot of swell around for the start of the weekend tho.

Terrible Ramp
Big winds/swell at Greenhead = plenty of scratched paint of the boat as there are no rubbers on the wooden ramp/jetty (I would bring some rubber buoys or the like if the swell is up), Boating wise be careful to keep your direction line on those main markers when heading out the bay it can be pretty hairy with the breakers on your right side also when heading out and at times it can be like a cray maze out there dodging them is an art!.
As for fishing best place within 4 hours of Perth for bottom bouncing as stated before don't have to head far find drop offs/ reef (don't be scared to fish near the Cray pots biggest baldies are definitely there) etc - Snapper,Dhuies,Baldies, Skippy, Blackass. Was there in October last year also did some drifting baiting aswell while anchored in about 20m depth north of greenhead and got tuna and mackies not huge mackies were around 1.2m and same for the tuna superb fun on light gear.
Make sure to remember the limits/guide for bottom demersals as I find this one place where its a definitly an issue!
Have Fun and stay safe

Thanks for the info mate, We
Thanks for the info mate, We always fish within the limits.
Will see what pots are around out from there.
usually i drive the boat on and off, so dont plan on nudging up to the jetty if its in that type of shape.
Swell will be about 2.5m so it looks and winds kind of 5-10 SE-SW. Should be ok i think. Worst case its a 20k drive back to Jurien but prefer not too.
Hardest thing about fishing shallower for baldies etc...is in Metro area this isnt that common there for I've not done much of it, so will be some fun finding the right ground :)
Wonder if any mackies are still about? Surely the recent storms, rain and drop in water temps they have likely moved on?
Cheers

Have launched from Jurien
Have done the launch from jurien sensationally better, I think it could be wishful thinking with mackies with this late winter this year, last year October was comparatively warm, to be honest I wouldnt even have tried for pelagics but a local at the ramp told me that he had seen them when he was out and said to have a crack.
All the baldies I got were in 40-45 meters, around cray pots reasonally far out, the dhuis and snapper were a lot closer in around 20 meters or so. The locals have mastered the art with baldies (dhuis are junk to them ........) as you can imagine definitely hit them up for tips.
