Maybe Looking for Deckies 4 Early October Montes trip
Hi Guys,
Looking at leaving Jurien on Sunday the 29th and could be wanting a deckie??
We are in the process of planning a trip to the Montebello's, launching from either Onslow or the Fortescue River Mouth?
Looking at heading off somewhere between the last week of September or the first week of October depending on weather (Is this a reasonable time to go)???.
This will be our first trip over there and would thoroughly appreciate any help in planning etc (Need to cross this one off the Bucket List)
Done a fair bit of research on Fishwrecked from other people who have posted their trip reports, thanks for posting.
Any extra advice would be much appreciated. Or is anyone else heading over there around these times??

best suggestion of all would
best suggestion of all would be not to lock in the dates til the weather looks good-this bit of coast suffers the same malaise (sthly's) as everywhere south of here.
We work around there a lot, but its a trip Ive got in my mind also.

I have forgotten when the cyclone seasion starts , but you might want to check , what ever you do don't leave your tow vehicle and trailer at fortescue river as it wont be there when you get back, its a popular spot with local sxxx heads from k town , you might be better of leaving from dampier for peace of mind

That's interesting petermac.
That's interesting petermac. I've left my car there 4 times and know people that regularly leave them there and never heard of a problem yet. Sino Iron seems to keep the idiots away a bit. Too many mine guys driving down and fishing outside of their shift seems to keep the shifty characters away.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Definately have to agree with Dodgy. Hardly ever heard of any troubles with leaving cars at Fortescue River. Ive had more dramas in Dampier.

I have let my car there plenty of times and never had a problem, I don't know anyone who has had an issue leaving their car there.

check out some of the weather
check out some of the weather websites like willy weather, you can get a history of conditions for areas could be a reasonable starting point. End of the day you still can never pick the weather and have to have other options planned.

I know I will be corrected if wrong, but I think the Monties are about 130km from Dampier. I hope to get there one fine day.

Hey Peter can you get a fuel
drop off at the Montes somewhere?? I was just planning taking enough onboard either in jerry cans and or fuel bladder and just unloading extra weight once there?? But if you can get a fuel drop, that may be easier??

crew
If you are in need of crew I'm more than happy to fly up!
PM me if interested.
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

changing props
Hi mate,
Not sure how handy or keen you are, but for those sort of trips i.e over 50nm you can save a heap of fuel by putting on a different prop, just for the journey there and back. (takes about 5min to change once there) allows you to carry the extra weight on the boat (all your camping gear and extra fuel etc) and sit on the plane with relatively low revs.

that is dead right, not to
that is dead right, not to mention the outboards longevity.
I have twin DF115's and empty on one engine it can just get on the plane and do 22 knots of you turn off the wind to get up.
But Im looking for a smaller pitch prop for a spare to use on our long trips-firstly to put on if one is damaged and also so if we need to run on one it will be able to get home allowing higher revs.
Mine aren't CR.

I have been trialing a 4 blade SS prop atm
and must say that when the boat is loaded it makes a big difference in time to get it up planning.. Eg Much quicker with 4 blade.
I have also noticed that in normal loaded conditions the 4 blade will burn 2 to 3 ltrs more per hour at 4500 rpm than the 3 blade SS prop..
But the KPH also increase with the 4 blade at the same revs.. The trade off is it gets up on the plane much faster.. I have tested this a few times now and have decided to just leave the 4 blade prop on!!
Anyone else done this testing??

montes are fun but there is good stuff closer to onslow
as for weatehr oct can be beaut, as u know there is no guarantee though
have an open plan, come back when suitable - there is enough islands to find a lee to fish even if its blowing
make sure to take a vhf so u can get weather updates, fm/am abc weather also helps

Tides
I can launch and get out the mouth with 0.7m (Only just) but if the Tide is over 3m you will have trouble with the river crossing before you get to the boat ramp. I have crossed it with 3.5m on a falling tide but it meant driving through salt water and a very long wash for the car when I got home, plus I have been there heaps and know were the road is.

Thanks Pilbra Dave, I hadnt
considered the river crossing on 3m + higher tide, when I called in there a couple months ago we were lucky enough to cross on a low tide..
Now I will defiantly recheck the tide times for when we arrive... Cheers again.
