Green liquid in baldie
Submitted by slam on Sat, 2013-06-22 09:20
On filleting a baldy a few days ago i came across a small black sack (peanut sized) filled with a dark green clear liquid near the throat section. Not really in the belly section. Can anyone shed light on this as I have never seen it previously. Unfortunately didn't take a photo.

Alot of fish
Alot of fish have this green ( pea size ) sack in them . I,m not realy sure what it is , but i know not to pop it when cleaning the fish. The fluid will soak into the flesh of the fish and effects the eating quality .
Some one else might know what it exactly is ?

Interesting
Would be interested if anyone knows this. I did pop it to find out what it was but quickly took fillet away when the liquid poured out.

Bile it could be
. I have come accross it many species, to name a few, Baldies, Snapper, Mulloway, Dhuys and nearly always sharks.
When I catch fish, I alway gut and see what they have feeding on and this green fluid is always present when there is bone or shell in the guts. I have read where some sharks actually produce Hc L Hydrochloric Acid to break down large bones on the prey they have eaten within the gut/stomach area.
When I have seen this in fish I am very careful not to let it come in contact with the flesh as it certainly stains. As for eating quality with green stains I can't say.
