This sport can kill ya.

Did anyone catch the small article in todays West about all those rec fishing deaths.

I also had thought to my self , that the number of accidents had increased, even just

in the last 12 months. There barely seems to be a week that goes by without a wave washing someone off

, a boat going down , or a fisho missing etc etc.

Any theorys? , is it just population, or maybe a lot of new people venturing out, or my

own theory, is that we are so sheltered at work, think s.o.ps ( safe operating procedures) and in

our daily lives ( think signs for every bloody thing), that when people go out they are just not prepared

for something so unpredictable and wild as nature?

And in the face of skippers tickets , updated epirbs and widespread g.p.s , shouldnt we be having less accidents?

Yeah Im with you on the SOPS

Yeah Im with you on the SOPS theory, working in the mining industry myself, you cant think for yourself anymore, everything is produres, policies etc etc No wonder we are quickly losing work to overseas companies that don't have the layers of redtape that we have have that make us uncompetitive.
Same for Aussies travelling overseas, In other countries they don't tell you when you've had enough to drink, its up to you to decide, you ask they will give it to you. Aussies cant handle their drink and many die because of this. Sad but true and yes Im an Aussie. Same goes for the water.
Great photo there by the way !!!

Not strict enough

Fri, 2013-06-21 20:41

You only got too look how easy it is to get a skippers ticket your basically buying it there is no intense training it is too easy get a ticket buy a boat your good to go.
I remember doing a nine week course with whit fords sea rescue it was called a tl3 that was a good course for people getting into boating when passed it enabled you to skipper unto a fifty foot boat with no paying passengers on board and the funny thing is when the skippers ticket became compulsory I had to sit for it what a joke my tl3 ticket was not good enough.

Before Skippers Ticket

Fri, 2013-06-21 21:09

Before the rec skippers ticket came in anyone could drive a non commercial boat regardless of size anywhere they liked, now at least you have some knowledge and experience.

Pro fishermen didn't call rec skippers "wood ducks" for nothing. As soon as they came up against something that they hadn't encountered before they would drive round in ever diminishing circles trying to hide from it until they disappeared up their own backsides.

And how many

Fri, 2013-06-21 21:26

recreational craft have a compass fitted, not many as it is not compulsory.

This electronic age, I wonder sometimes.

everytime I go out (especially if I go out far) I manually work out and tell others onboard the return bearing.

Yeah I even show my young fella the how to use the compass basically and the lanmarks to get back through the reef up our way. He can drive the boat but is too young for a RST.

rec skippers ticket

Sat, 2013-06-22 16:18

my old employer was forced to put us through a course with John Lally in Dampier after it was pointed out that as the boat we used to fix the nav aids was commercially registered we needed the right ticket to operate it guess what when rec skippers tickets were introduced it wasn't good enough still had to do the rec ticket just another money grab just like tagging and testing portable electrical tools every 3 months is we live in a nanny state

If you saw how much gear

Sat, 2013-06-22 16:50

If you saw how much gear boilys and fitters manage to damage over a 3 month period you would appreciate the system.

Saying that I'm just finishing a full shift of it and its not my favourite job.

Rec ticket

Sat, 2013-06-22 18:51

When the rec tickets came in all I had to do was send them the form in with my MC 5 number on it and bingo, three weeks later there was my rec ticket, no bother or fuss.

i hated it taging and testing

Sat, 2013-06-22 19:58

I hated it worst job a inelect can be given , and yes boilys are shockers (oh I made a joke) on their gear not like us blokes the most ironic think I have seen was when we had to retro fit all the welders with a thing called a dead man switch they could have come up with a better name I would have thought
