Five Fathom

Heh guys,

Planning to try anchor and burleying off the back of the five fathom on Sunday for first time.

Would appreciate any tips on safety when anchored in this area. My main concern is being anchored on the back of the bank and swell coming through etc.

Cheers!

( PS I have a 5.3 m glass cuddy cab and 55m rope/reef anchor )

you will be fine.  the water is well over 10m deep.  waves are extremely unlikely to break unless you get a freak wave.  Just let out plenty of rope so if well moves through under you it doesn't pull out the anchor.

I've anchored dozens of times off of 3 mile in 15-20m and never had a problem.

FFB Sunday

The swell is forecast to be low on Sunday so you should be very safe, but when it gets up (4-5m) FFB can break, so never get complacent. I have had to take evasive action on the northern end of FFB on 4-5m day. We had been drifting safely for and hour or so when a bigger than usual set rolled through. If I hadn't seen it coming, fired up the engine and gunned it to seaward, we would have been in trouble as it broke across a wide area.
