Augusta Fishing Trip

 Hi there

My 1st post and new member to fishwrecked.com. I am heading down to Augusta this weekend 12th/04/2013 for a fishing trip to catch some Salmon. And I have heard of two place to go.

1. Cosy Corner

2. Hamelin Bay

Can anyone give me advise, and good locations in Cosy Corner and Hamelin Bay to fish. And what bait to use?

Also stupid question, but I am new to the fishing scene and I am hooked, so here is the stupid question. The Salmon you catch, can they be eaten? or are they just sporting fish? thank you for your time.

Notes: Been doing alot of fishing at Floreat Drain, in Perth, catching decent size Tailor. Six Tailor in last two weeks, ranging from 35cm-52cm, using ganged hooks, and mullies, best time for catching 4.30pm-5.45pm

Welcome Eric

Welcome to the site Eric, both those areas are great to fish , but i havn't been there for a while . Yeah salmon are considered poor to average eating. I like them if they are fresh and they are great on the smoker .

Check out this thread  http://fishwrecked.com/forum/2013-salmon  .  The crew have been doing reports and supplying some great info .

Some times it takes a while to get replies as most people are at work during the day, but in the the evenings there is a lot more activiy.

Looking forward to seeing a report from your trip .  Cheers Grant .

G'day Eric

Welcome , Should still be firing for you in those dates , The best things you can take is a quality pair of Polaroid Sunnies to spot the fish (and Hat) , the Swell looks to be O.K for this comming weekend so should be fishable. Take a selection of lures including some heavier ones if you need to get more distance out of your cast if the schools are hanging further out. Good Luck

Thanks Grantarctic1 and Habanero for the advice

I bought some Halco Twistys 55g and am going to use mullies on ganged hooks 3/0. So hopefully catch a few. I also heard and did some re-search that you can go on Bobs track, just past Bushby rd/Caves road and drive onto the beach and fish from there.

I am going to try these place

1. Cape Leeuwin road, off the rocks and hopefully at the lighthouse as well. ( not sure if i can get past the barriers at the lighthouse tourism center) not sure if they like you fishing there

2. Cosy Corner

3. Hamelin Bay - Heading North

4. Bobs Track to Hamelin Bay - basically going on bobs track for the pure joy of off roading

Can anyone give advice on best time to go fishing? or can i go from sun rise to sun set?

Rain

Mon, 2013-04-08 13:29

I did hear that Bobs Track got washed out and  pretty serious 4WDing is required , Best time to fish is when you can spot them , if you are prepared to spend a hour or two on any of the rock headlands there is a fair chance a school will come through , up to you to hook em...A Smilin Jack lure is good to have in your lure arsnell . I imagine if the fish are on in Hamlin that the Pro's will be netting it.

Thats a shame about Bobs Track, i heard it was a good fun drive, pity. So what is the best way to get onto hamelin bay? go on hamelin bay road and through the camp site?

Ok will do, ill pop down, and get 2 smilin jacks. Great advice. Thanks

Only 2hours of work left and hitting the beach for a few tailor. Born to fish~!

Boranup

Mon, 2013-04-08 14:55

You can access the Northern end of Hamlin Bay via The Boranup Track , make sure you lower tyre pressure as the beach can be quite soft in places , but generally some great Gutters up that end , or as you said through the Caravan Park end.

Good Luck

Mon, 2013-04-08 21:13

Was at Hamlin a few weeks ago and you can only get on the beach using Bob's track you can't get on at the caravan end. Has been that way for a few years now. I would say Bob's got hammered over the Easter weekend too.

Good luck.

Hamelin Bay

Tue, 2013-04-09 13:10

If you are coming from Margaret River you turn Right at Karridale and head to Caves road, turn left and keep following Caves rd and it will take you directly to Hamelin Bay. Karridale is on Bussel hwy. Hope this helps and good luck?

 Hey Stephenm

I know how to get to Hamelin Bay, thanks, but should have been more clear, actually getting onto the bay itself. People have been saying it cant be accessed by 4WD, as the roads are bad onto the beach. I have heard of Bobs track, so my question, how do i get onto actually Hamelin Bay itself

Boranup Beach

Tue, 2013-04-09 14:14

The only access onto Boranup beach (Hamelin Bay beach) is by Bob's track which I am fairly sure is still ok to use, but the beach is closed to vehicles back close to Hamelin Bay itself. The best fishing I have found is up to the north of the beach close to the rocks where if there are no salmon there are always plenty of herring and other small fish.

hope you can make sense of this, maybe a phone call to the local DEC might help?

Cheers

 hey Eric, head to cosy

Wed, 2013-04-10 19:33

hey Eric, head to cosy corner, at the car park follow the track to the beach (on foot) the beach there has a reef that runs parallel with the beach with a nice gutter on the inside, ive had salmon cruising in schools of around 15-20 in this gutter so close at times i could almost poke them with my rod, i reccomend if your going to be in the area its definatly worth a look, plent of big bull herring there last week also, half a mulie did the trick on slower schools and smiling jack or popper brought in from the reef over there heads worked on the more eratic looking schools that were moving through quite quickly, i reccomend a good pair of poloroids and sight casting, works great for all beach fishing in general

good luck mate

p.s many people say salmon is a shit eating fish, i think if you bleed them apon landing they are beautiful fresh, cut into steaks and garlic butter on bbq.

Info for you or others that

Thu, 2013-04-11 17:37

Info for you or others that might want it.

For Bornaup beach take Hooley Rd off Boranup Drive.

For Hamelin Beach as others have said and as you know, take the track heading West about 600m north of Bushby Drive. Grace Rd which comes off Boranup Drive will get you to the dunes of Hamelin Beach(about 3km north of the other track) but no 4wd access to the beach.

Bobs Hollow Track is a bit rough when i checked it out a few weeks ago. But nothing letting your tyres down a bit and some good driving couldnt overcome.

Never went to the drain last

Fri, 2013-04-12 13:38

Never went to the drain last night, but was there two nights ago, and just to the right of the drain towards scarborough, about 150 meters from drain. A guy caught 80cm tailor. I caught 1 tailor 35cm, and another guy caught two whiting guessing around 35cm mark as well. Best time for hooking up 5.30pm

Hah, take it easy:) they've been doing for years and years.......they are actually the ones to watch for and hear from because they are there to make a living. When the salmon pros are doing well it means the fish are lots of fish there for us to catch. It's bad news when they are not catching anything for us:)

cheers
