Binoculars

Just wondering what types of binocs people use out on their boats?

I checked these out today http://www.leedervillecameras.com.au/binoculars/sol/sol-hd-8x32-binoculars ,

·         8x optical zoom

·         32mm diameter in lens size

·         Nitrogen filled

·         Waterproof to 5 metres.

·         Bak4 coating on the lenses (Bak 4 is a type of coating on the lens, meaning it is a full multi coated optic, and performs better in low light)

seemed very comfortable and a good fit to my eyes,

very clear image also.

ive got some "brushnell" rubber coated binocs, 8x50 lens, apparently they float but havent tried. very clear picture and they are auto focus (once adjusted to your eyes) i'd recomend ones with rubber coating because that way they wont slide around on the boat. mine were about $250 off ebay and i'm very happy with them

I have brushnell ones too I think. My only advice is that you can buy a kincrome "safe case" from Bunnings to keep them in along with your valuables if you like. They are waterproof etc. and bright yellow so you feel like a baller

Nikon's

I bought a set of Nikon's for bird surveys when I used to work for government. Very happy with the clarity of the optics, particularly for picking out small birds and their colours. Having said that, for use in a boat, definitely get some with rubber eye cups and the bigger the lense (which is the second part of the equation) the more light they let in and the better they perform in low light. Higher magnification will make it hard to keep them still too.

Sounds like Steve and New Age are on the money with comments.

I have a set of Pentax 10x50.

I have a set of Pentax 10x50. Nitrogen filled , multi coated, Water proof etc.

I bought them mainly for astronomy use at night but they also serve as my boat binos as well. Bought them from BTOW in malaga.

As mentioned the bigger the aperture the more light gathered, and the better the performance in low light. 8 x to 10x magnification is all you want. Beyond that they are to difficult to hold stable in a small boat.

There are some other considerations if you want to use them for "star gazing" but they shouldn't affect your use.

If you buy a hard case to protect them, open the case up to let it vent in storage. Moisture from the marine atmosphere and handling will be trapped in the case and leade to the rapid corrosion of the binos.
