beating radar pingers..?
Submitted by Quobbarockhopper on Sun, 2013-02-03 14:19
am looking into how to avoid the dreaded pingers.. especially with our local fishing comp in a few months and the usual influx of rich kid boats stealing hard earned spots and a few of the local boy also sporting big white domes on top of their cats etc
have done a quick bit of reading, and apparently glass boats dont show up as readliy as ali, but as guessing a decent radar will still pick up the metal on board...
anyone had any experience with any of this?

Its not the metal, its how
Its not the metal, its how reflective the target is to the radar's wavelength.
If it was easy, governments all over the world would not be spending millions of dollars every year trying to work out how to avoid really good radar.
Tip: don't fish your good spots in the comp.

Unless thay have ARPA or know
Unless thay have ARPA or know how to do a radar plot you dont have too much to worry about unless they are on top of you.

if they have radar
if they (pingers) have radar and just a bit of an education in how to use it thay can have you pinged from a very long way off, not over the horizion, but dam close to it. unfortunatly it's just there and you have to live with it

I doubt that very much if
I doubt that very much if there is any swell, radar on a small boat is next to useless, I know I wasted money on it.

Just because some boats are
Just because some boats are fitted with radar don't assume they what to ping you..or they what to ping at all!

Just because they have radar
Just because they have radar doesnt mean they know how to use it well. First you need good conditions and then you need to know what boats are ones worth pinging.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Marbles right.Its hard enough
Marbles right.
Its hard enough to do a radar plot on a large vessel manually and accurately, and near impossible on a small vessel, unless ARPA is fitted and then can be done automatically.
Why would anyone do it without being close enough to see what your actually doing anyway?
I know its much worse in the metro, but up here in Gero especially if out at the islands, your welcome to pop past and say hello.

hey i agree with the
hey i agree with the comments about dont assume their pinging you.... dint know gow many thimes i have headed out to s spot already marked in my gps, to find another boat akready there.... and i just move on... ocean belongs to everyone... secondly, ask the us navy... i have had personal experience pinging a us submarine as it came into gage roads. visually the conning tower was there for all to see. on the radar it was a tiny tiny speck.

agree with Johno and marble weather plays big part
weather conditions play a big part in using radar on surface targets, but still stick to what i've experianced good high quality radar smooth conditions and smart operater can do some pretty good fixes. no disrespect ment to above posters

the other thing though Meg,
the other thing though Meg, is that to do an accurate radar plot from miles away without ARPA needs more than a "smart operator".
It takes experience without even being on a small boat.
So that person who CAN do that accurately is likely to have many years of sea experience and hence doesnt fit the picture of the rich newby wood-duck who splashed out on a radar to save finding his own ground.
In fact Id say that anyone who can do a plot on a small boat in anything but glassoff with an accuracy of better than 1/4 mile at 2 miles range would be doing very well, and that is stopped also.
Itd be easier to just drive within a few hundred meters and pretend to be going past that fart around trying to ping from a long distance.
no disrepect intended to your opinion but I think its blown out of all proportion
