hi, I recently bought a daiwa monster mesh max spin jig rod pe 3/4. What spin reel/size do you guys recommend for it? It will be used for bottom fishing with baits and jigs for dhu's, baldies and other tasty bottom fish etc. budget no more than $400. thinking stradic, sustain or saltist? thanks

My friend has a Mesh PE 3-4 with a shimano saragosa 6000. 50Ib braid, I think thats a little overkill but he hasnt lost anything yet on it.

have a saltiga 4000

don't get a stradic if you
don't get a stradic if you can afford a sustain. The sustain is lower geared so it will be easier to pull weight/jig with. the saltist is high speed.
The sustain is only available in a 6000 or 10000 size. The saltiest is probably in between the two sizes. Take your rod in and try the reels on it to give a better idea.

sustain come in more sizes than
6000 & 10000 , i have a 5000 that i blew to pieces in 6 months still waiting till middle of september for the warranty replacment, just serviced my stradic thats 6 months old and couldnt get the spool of the main shaft ,was corroded on seems the drag seal dont do jack as the drag was full of salt even when i reasembled the drag cap i put a light smear of grease on the cap seal then screwed it on ,then took the cap back off and found the seal still dosnt touch the spool at all even with 1mm of grease on the seal , just replaced the bearings in the stradic aswell as they were already grinding ,the new rubber sealed ceramic bearings i put in fell heaps smoother than the original crap shimano pass off as bearings, go the saltist or maybee try the segate light ,oh and i do wash my reels after every use under a warm shower then wiped down with inox

Sorry I was meaning for
Sorry I was meaning for pe3-4, i wouldnt run less than the 6000. They also go down to a 1000. I havent had any probs with my stradic 2500 or sustain 4000. I have also used a saltist 4500 and they are good reels just high speed which isnt ideal but ok. Also the sustains are alot lighter than the saltist. Id also look at the seagate over the saltist as its pretty much the same reel just lower geared.

Keep saving and buy a stella.
Truly the best economy. Even if you go second hand. Another 150 would pin a lovely 6000.
You'll have it for the rest of your days.

The two I would look at in
The two I would look at in that budget is the Saragosa and Daiwa Seagate 4500. Since ou don't like the Gosa then the Seagate it is. It's a beefed up Saltist and at a better gear ratio. I love my little 3500.

dont get a 6000
Shimano 6000s are big reels.
I was looking at getting a 5000 twinpower/stradic/sustain and then a 6000 twinpower appeared on Ebay nice and cheap. I figured they would be a similar size but did not have time to research or see one. The Twinpower 6000 body is heaps bigger and heavier than my mates 5000 twinpower
I would go for a 5000 shimano reel, they are better balanced for PE3-4
I have two 2500 stradics and think they are great but I have not used a larger size.
Take your rod into your loal fishing store and see what feels good.
cheers

Good point but the problem
Good point but the problem as I see it with a 5000 sized Shimano in that price bracket is finding one strong enough to handle PE4. That can be over 50lb so a lot of drag etc.
I wouldn't hesitate with an SW Twinpower or Stella but would pull it up there.

If it were me id be waiting
If it were me id be waiting till the gosa sw comes out in a month or two. Id go 6000 because you only get 200m of pe4 on a 5000.

CAT-A-LINA
have you thought of a Daiwa Catalina 4500 or 4500H? throw in an extra $200 and you can find one on the internet. I have a 4500h on my demon blood PE3-5 with 40lb saltiga braid. feels great, sounds awesome, handles everything. they have the same internals as a saltiga except for 5 bearings (1 in the handle, 2 in the spool and 2 in the traversed block). all making no difference to the reels capabilities compared to a saltiga
have a little read of the alan hawk review

I have monster mesh with a saltist 4500 h with 30 pound braid and is a strong reliable well weighted setup. The saltists are bullet proof... I just brought a stradic 5000 to test theories, so cant comment on the shimanos as of yet... Personally diawa rod- diawa reel....
Jiggy jig.
