Sambo Jigging this to heavy?

Hey guys,

Looking at going out with saltwater charters in October at least twice to try get onto some big sambo's.. My current jig stick is a Wilson LiveFibre Venom 5'6 80lb - Paired with Stella 20k running 60lb braid.

Is this overkill for Sambo jigging or will there be some monsters big enough to give it a workout?

Thanks

Chris

for the shallower work that he does, in 40m and the like, it might be a bit overkill.

With the sharks that you are

With the sharks that you are all but guaranteed to hook up to on the deeper spots, that won't be enough :-)

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

No sharks? The 10 jigs lost

No sharks? The 10 jigs lost on my boat (6 by me) over the last two trips would say otherwise

Most of the time sambos will

Most of the time sambos will go harder if you go harder so the heavier stuff can provide for some awesome fun when you lock it up.

Might hurt you a bit more but its all good fun. Can use PE4 and the likes but as I said they put more hurt on when you do the same.

If a shark wants your fish ,

If a shark wants your fish , is 80-100lb braid really gonna save it over 60lb??

Just interested as I haven't done enough barge jigging

If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

On a big fish - no, as you

On a big fish - no, as you still cant overpower it quick enough.

Sub 15kg fish you can haul up pretty quick with locked or near locked drag though

 I think charters commonly

I think charters commonly use 80lb braid. Depends on how hard you're gonna fish and how happy you are with your knots etc...

 Cheers for the info lads!

Cheers for the info lads! Max drag on a Stella 20 is 25kg so u could run max drag all day with 60lb and have no problem only thing is if you started having to slow spool with hand you would have to be a bit more careful then if using 80-100lb.

Cant wait to get out there come October!

Cheers

Chris

October

October may be a bit early for the big schools , it's usuall not until early to mid November before the big spawning schools turn up.

I have landed 14 fish up to 1500mm in one day with a Saltist 40 running PE5 all were released fit and strong, it's mainly how you use the rod that turns their head and gets you a quick fight.

I use to Decky on a jigging boat on weekends for about 4 years.
