Without being able to see
Without being able to see where and how your transducer is mounted makes it all pretty hard and chances are that it will be the transducer and not the unit or its settings, best bet at this stage is to look at the install manual and look for things that could be wrong with your particular install, it sound like your transducer is sitting too high at present, the flat base of the ducer should be horizontal with the waterline while you are afloat and not lined up for sitting on the trailer.
Installation manual is here, page 13 onwards should help you out.
Good luck www.lowrance.com/Root/Lowrance-Documents/US/HDS_INSTALL_IM_EN_988-10043-001_w.pdf

What boat you got it fitted on?
Some description of the location, boat hull etc will help you get responses rather than people suggesting stuff that isn't valid.
Sounds like the problem I had. Moved trhe tranny to a position where less strakes on hull and tilted the rear of the tranny down further. Much better pic now.
