I can't see the point of them. The twin Hyper disc drag of the 20K spool has one of the best drags going around and you simply don't need any more drag than what hat offers so it comes down to line capacity. what sort of fishing will you be doing that will see you spooled using a 20K Stella? I can only think of Big Tuna and Marlin off the top of my head. I guess there is also the bling factor!

Yeh Sammy, but how much

Tue, 2012-07-03 21:00

Yeh Sammy, but how much 80-100lb braid would you fit on the standard 20K spool - 400-500m of good quality braid? Combine this with 20Kg of drag, and you can almost stop anything before you're spooled off ... that's to my thinking anyway ... my back can't even stand 10Kg of drag

I've got the 16K JM spool

Tue, 2012-07-03 21:36

I've got the 16K JM spool for my 8K as a spare for the bigger stuff, but I have to admit I haven't come close to using the 35kg of max drag it's rated to! I purchased mine with the handle and knob, which I wouldn't recommend, but I do like the spool. Feels every bit as smooth as the original and looks the ducks nuts as well. If there wasn't a point or market for them they wouldn't be manufactured!

 The handle just felt weird

Tue, 2012-07-03 22:15

The handle just felt weird to crank for me. The knob on the other hand I hated. Only a single bearing so kind of scraped and squeaked from new and wasn't as free as the original. Then the nail in the coffin for me is the nut on the inside connecting to the handle instead of a screw. It kept coming loose all the time, then fell off on the way out in the boat luckily landing in the transom. If I tightened it any more it affected the bearing from free spinning no matter what shim or washer I tried. So I went back to the original handle and bought a SOM knob for it, which I am really happy with.

Hi Yewie, Mike here, ive got

Wed, 2012-07-04 08:29

Hi Yewie,

Mike here, ive got the 16 000 and 25 000 JM monster spools for my stella 10 000 and 20 000 for an upcoming trip to chesterfeilds to tackle some monster doggies, so i hav'nt tested the spools yet but can let you know how they go when i return, but they do make the stella look even sweeter, can never have too much bling. i also have the knob's on them and i hav'nt had a problem with any squeaking noises and i love it, to me it feels real comfortable and all i did is to put a tiny drop of loctite on the screw so it could'nt come loose,

cheers

Mike

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

 Yeah you could put loctite

Thu, 2012-07-05 00:05

Yeah you could put loctite on the nut of a "hop up" to a $1000+ reel. Or in the first place for little more expense, just buy a far superior product with twin bearings that doesn't need loctite with the screw design. Completely up to you. I know through personal and unbiased usage what I would prefer.

JM Monster Spool!!

Thu, 2012-07-05 17:52

Yewie.... its bling who cares other wise ha ha!!

The large spool capacity is great and as for the extra drag well each to their own but " its better to have and not need then need and not have "

As for what Mike was saying, many upmarket reels locktite screws etc so that ain a biggy!

We've sold out of the 25000 JM spool but we have more coming in, PM Blake if we can help!

Ryan, bling factor is a good enough excuse for me!, it's just trying to explain to the mrs why I need more fishing related gear!

mw87, the JM knobs are a twin

Sun, 2012-07-08 07:05

mw87, the JM knobs are a twin bearing and are as good as the standard ones when installed correct, locktite must be used and you will never have a problem with them.

Yewie, this is a trip I have arranged with Jigging Master, the Chesterfield Islands are between Australia and New Cal, I will add a map below so you can see the location, it is very remote and would only see a few boats a year and from what I have seen is home to some large dogtooth tuna which is our main target species.

Yes we will be testing a few new products out you will see the full report on here once we return.

The Jigging Master monster spools look amazing and are well priced when compared to SOM and other after market spools, the drags like all JM reels are super smooth, they look awesome I have added a photo of one of mine below as well to show how good they can look with the after market power arm and t bar as well.
