Hives from eating fish?

hi all,
has anybody suffered hives from eating certain types of fish?
the reason I ask is that im new to fishing/boating,so we try eating nearly every type of fish we catch
just to form an opinon.
My daughter came down with a bad case of hives after we caught and filited what ive been told was a Sampson fish.
we eat sand whiting ,hearing all the time with out any probs, so I don't think it was a reaction.

any ideas guys?

Certainly possible

However be aware of all fish now.

To get allergic to "something" you have to have met the substance before. It is not possible to get allergic to something you have never been in touch with previously.

However once sensitized and you develop a reaction it needs clarification. And until then all fish is sus for your daughter. You dont want to let her eat (any) fish until clarified because anaphylaxis is scary.

Seafood has some allergies, especially Prawn (Crustaceans) and Shellfish. Fish is rarer but happens.

All she needs is to see a GP, and Get a IgE (allergy Antibody) and RAST (Radioallergosorbent test) blood test for Fish (FX2 in most panels) to define. It is possible that it was something else but why take a chance.

So does that mean the first

So does that mean the first time you come into any allergen, that you'll be fine at least that first time? Its the next time (or several next times) that causes the anaphylaxis?

I know with bee stings, some people end up allergic after several bites though.

For the fish, if it was purchased or given to you, theres a possibility that it came into contact with something that your daughter is allergic to. For example, if the fillet was handled with latex gloves instead of food prep gloves, she could be reacting to the latex instead. This could go for numerous other contaminations that are otherwise safe (prepped on a bench that had peanuts cut, or some other thing). Best to get checked if the reactions severe though as Crasny suggested. He's a doctor, listen to him ;)

Its just like an antibody to an infection. You dont become immune until you meet the infection (or get vaccinated against it). No AB(antibody) and you can get it, with ABs you get immune. But some ABs in our body wane over years, and you can get it again.

With allergy it is still ABs that are created. The AB is called Immunoglobulin E (IgE). Once you build this up, and it can sometimes take more than one exposure, you are sensitised. Not all off us are prone to allergies.

If this builds up enough it results in a super immune response and you get Mast cell activation causing massive Histamine release resulting in Anaphylaxis.

Bee stings are a classic. It has 2 reactions. One toxic and the other allergic. Most off us would swell and get an itch. That is a local toxic reaction, and not allergy based. However if for example stung on your foot, and you get a rash on your trunk etc, it is allergy based.

I agree that other things and not the fish is possible, hence the testing recommendation.

I once held a samson fish up for a photo and it was resting on the sensitive skin on my fore arm, after that I had a bit of a rash from something on the sambo.

I also had the same thing happen with skippy on the south coast but this time on my hands.

Allergies and contact skin irritation (dermatitis) is possible. You dont need to be allergic to something to get a contact dermatitis. Its just a toxic or chemical reaction. The classic in the world is poison ivy. This in the US will give everyone a rash, but it is not allergy based mostly.

Unlikely it was sea lice, more likely a contact by algae etc on the rope.

Fire coral is one that divers sometimes encounter here.

As Cransy1 related to you

Mon, 2013-06-24 19:27

As Cransy1 related to you Driftking, "You don't want to let her eat (any) fish until clarified because anaphyaxis is scary". We have a daughter who has reactions to things like dairy and cashews. It's scary!

As he explained, it's a complicated situation but be aware that (from what I understand) previous reactions are often no indication as to what will happen in the future. While your daughter may only have experienced hives on the last occasion; she may have a serious reaction to fish the next time she eats it, which could include an anaphylactic response including hives, vomiting, breathing difficulties, etc.

It sounds like you've already taken on board his advice and you are going to get her tested ASAP, which is certainly the way to go!

If required I can copy a plan to recognise and treat/what to do with anaphylaxis. But its freely available on the net.

http://www.allergy.org.au/ is a good medical one.

I have been eating fish

Mon, 2013-06-24 20:07

I have been eating fish /seafood my whole life , (I'm 41 ) but since about 1999 - 2000 started to react to fish . I was living Margs way and fishing a fair bit , eating alot of jewi ,etc . Started with hives , then turned to full body going red , and difficulties breathing ,itchy etc . I did try anti histimine tablets , but it wasn't worth the hassle , nor constant ribbing from wife and friends thinking I was crazy ! I'm not allergic to squid , or crustacean , so I'm ok there . I love my fishing and obviously still go , just wish there was something I could do . Any ideas ? By the way , I don't react when I get spiked in the hand , a bit itchy but not the rest .

Get an Immunologist

Tue, 2013-06-25 13:44

or allegist to test you. They can define it better. Sometimes you can be allergic to only certain types of fish.

And yes Squid and other cephalopods, and Crustaceans are a different species, and very often you are alleric to one type, and not the others. Much like being allergic to bees and wasps. Its one or the other, rarely both.

EDIT: By the way if you start having difficulty breathing dont muck around with it. It is a warning that Immunity with IgE is building, and anaphylaxis may be next!!!!!

fish re-action

Sun, 2013-06-30 17:03

I had a re-action to shovel nose the one and only time eaten (west coast of cape York Qld). My full body rash lasted 4 days. One person in the group that ate it at the same time had a reaction that only lasted a few hours.
