Friday Forecast?? and hillarys help
Submitted by dant on Tue, 2013-07-02 08:04
Gday All,
Just wondering what to make of Fridays forecast at the moment, Seabreeze looks sht (2.5m swell with 15kn est), but willy weather and BOM look to be ok (seas up to 1 metre, swell 1 -1.5m and 10kn to variable easterlys).
Still very cautious when Easterly are predicted because they are usually stronger than predicted, hence my hesitation on going out deeper. i have a 6.5m glass.
Anyone thinking of heading out on friday?
Any thoughts are appreciated.
Cheers All once again.

yeah, it's a pretty easy
yeah, it's a pretty easy passage out. if you have charts in your GPS you can see the depths. otherwise, follow another boat out. The rotto ferries go straight out as well.
it's pretty hard to stuff up, you can see the waves breaking normally, if no waves are breaking it only gets about 2m at it's most shallow anyway, so you aren't going to hit bottom.

cheer uncle and Justo - i have seen other boats go through there during the light, wish i would have followed them then.
Its just il be going out at about 5.30am on Friday morning - so not that confident in the dark first go as i wont be able to see the waves breaking, and it might be awhile before and boat heads out.

Co-ord for the middle of the
Co-ord for the middle of the gap - 31 49.795, 115 42.446. Head straight for that after getting out of the marina. As you approach, behind you, you'll see the lighthouse lined up between two large aerials.

Dant - I dont think its a good idea in the dark mate
Weve gone out of there many times on the way out to the HYC FAD and rotto at daytime. Its very unpredictaible even at day. If you go directly west of the marina opening you will go through the gap it gets to 6m - DO NOT go anywhere near the 2m depth somebody mentioned in a post above even if it looks OK. Navionics has a free web app if you go to it you can see the gap directly west between the breakers at 6m depth. Weve gone through there and its been like a pond, other times its looked fine and then turned dangerous quickly - Others may disagree but I just think its a real bad idea to do it at night not worth the risk in 2.5 -3m swell and 12+ knot easterly in the dark also most of the times ive gone out theres been craypots and theres plenty of whales out there at the moment. By the way i havent forgotten to PM you those deeper fishing spots I promised so dont bloody kill ya self Cheers mate

some good points.... just
some good points....
just keep an eye on the weather Dant and see how you go on friday.
just for the record, i wasn't suggesting to go over the 2m area's, merely just stating that's about as shallow as it gets, so if there's no swell, there's little that can go wrong. but as always, when the ocean is involved (or water in general) caution and common sense must be used.
if you do manage to get out, let us all know how you go.
cheers

thanks Again Beeroclock and
thanks Again Beeroclock and Justo - the feedback is appreciated, and saftey first for me - i have to do it a couple of times and get a good feel for it before id attempt it in the morning.
thinking about heading up to ocean reef maybe or two rocks with Paul G, the weather looks ok Metro, but the wind picks ups a bit on the lancelin forecast so not sure which forecast to read for two rocks.
No stress beeroclock wont hound you for them - appreciate whatever is given.
Thanks all again.

No worries Dant. Good on you
No worries Dant. Good on you for taking a bit of caution, especially in the dark. Just for reference, i've found that anywhere up to a 2m swell, absolutely no worries going through the gap. 2.5m, takes a bit of caution and anywhere around a 3m swell can be pretty hairy, but do-able.

BOM and Willy weather are still saying 1 -1.5m swell and good old Seabreeze is showing 2.5 - dont get why such a contrast in forecast.
