Temporary internet options

 Hi all

We moved into a new house a couple of weeks ago and those dumb f@$ks at NBN Co have stuffed things up royally. After a series of failed attempts they have now determined that fibre needs to be brought to the property through a conduit which has to be installed through the neighbouring verge. The issue with that is there is a house under construction and the trench has a site shed, materials hoist, large skip bin and a heap of materials in the way! Basically it is the only part of the site where they can lay anything down. I'm not confident they will get it through for at least a few weeks.

We don't want to wait that long for internet for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is my wife works from home a lot of the time. It's also inconvenient for thinsg like streaming, general internet use and our solar system needs wifi to be operational. Are there any temporary solutions that anyone has used to get them out of trouble?

We can't use personal hotspot either as we can get one bar of 4G on our phones most of the time, so we can barely load a webpage!

cheers

If it's a new subdivision

Fri, 2025-10-03 11:57

If it's a new subdivision talk to the developer. There should be duct from the nearest comm's pit in the verge to your property, and the home builder should've installed a "lead-in conduit" between that to the house.

Wireless options are Starlink, Pentanet or 4G/5G (I went Telstra 5G to avoid NBN in an established suburb with fibre to the node - it's been faultless)

No we subdivided a block in

Fri, 2025-10-03 14:09

No we subdivided a block in an established area, so it's our problem. We've got a lead0in conduit and the fibre has been installed to the house. The only thing is there is nothing to connect to!

I only need it for a short time so I'm looking into a trial plan for Starlink.

 Starlink your best option

Fri, 2025-10-03 16:59

Starlink your best option imo Dave, in the fact you can pause the service. I'm on a 50gig $80 a monthn plan and just have it paused through the winter until I'm up at the Bird or Gnaraloo. It's fantastically fast.

 Thanks Andy. We have Telstra

Wed, 2025-10-08 11:22

Thanks Andy. We have Telstra Starlink equipment arriving today. Basically it seems we return in 30 days without incurring any cost but we'll see.

It looks like they may be able to get fibre through next Monday so we might be on the right track at last. It has been an absolute head-f@$k to organise this, when on the surface it looked easy. More fool me!

I forgot that Telstra was in cahoots with Starlink now. Glad to hear you're getting things sorted.

Not quite Andy! Set it up

Thu, 2025-10-09 11:20

Not quite Andy! Set it up last night and I don't have any outside locations that get a good unobstructed view of the sky. As a result the signal was pretty crappy. I'll get home before dark and put it on the roof which should fix the problem.

If you have 5G in the area I have a 5G modem you are welcome to

Fri, 2025-10-03 20:29

Simply put a chip for it and gives amazing internet speed.  NBN might even provide a 400gig chip as our resort did whilst we were awaiting NBN to pull their proverbial out.  Just drop me a pm ....located Piara waters

 Thanks Gordon but we have

Mon, 2025-10-06 14:02

Thanks Gordon but we have the modem with a chip but no 5G as we're in a blackspot. I would think it was all a conspiracy by my wife to improve my browsing habits but she's more angry than me!

Starlink

Tue, 2025-10-07 12:25

Starlink is your go to if you cant get a wireless solution through the likes of pentanet or similar.

That said, in some areas residential plans are at capacity and they then charge an arm and a leg to access the network (in my area thats currently circa $1200 plus the infrastructure and monthly charges).  If you go with a roam plan that avoids this I don't think they like it if it operates from a fix location for very long periods of time (I've not had issue running mine during work hours a couple of days in a row but believe there is some limit).
