Hey Reece

Sat, 2012-06-23 09:29

interesting you say that, as Fisheries onshore told me unequivocally (and another cray fisho at the islands) that NO MATTER how long you are out for, the limit onboard is 2 dhuies (or 12 crays).

But the way it looks to me in the rules is that the dhuie interpretation of theirs is incorrect.

My question to them regarding crays was "if I am out there for several days, with 1 licence can I catch my 2 days limit and arrive back at shore with 12 crays (boat limit)?"

Answer-"NO"

And in the same situation with dhuies, "can I bring two home with 1 licence onboard?"

Answer-"yes"

"whats the difference?"

"those are the rules, stick to them".

BTW Im NOT commenting in anyway on your situation above, my only interest is in what fisheries said.

Make SURE you remember the name of the officer you spoke to.

Great pics though!

I thought it had something to do with what constituted a legal overnite stay at the islands, ie: in your mate's shack.

Sat, 2012-06-23 11:01

I was told that is only in regards to skinning/30cm fillets.

If you (for example) are alone, and out for 3 days (and I imagine can provide evidence of that), you can have onboard fillets from 6 high risk or 10kg fillets (whichever is least). That much is pretty clear cut.

But the question is, could you have in that collection-3 dhuies?

Reece has been told yes (and thats what I believe is the correct interpretation)

I was told no, and have been careful not to push it.

My experience with them (and most government compliance officers for that matter)is if you ask something unusual or interpretive, the answer is NO.

a quick glance at the rules

Sat, 2012-06-23 10:28

for the abrohlis says that there is a possesion limit of 10kgs of fillets or 1 days bag limit of whole or trunked fish or am i reading that wrong seeing as fisheries said it was ok

thats right

Sat, 2012-06-23 10:51

yeah thats correct but they still count back how many in your stash and you are not supposed to skin unless landed ON the island (legal overnight stay). So they can and do ID your fish.

Glad this has been cleared up

Glad this has been cleared up to some extent. I'm glad I kept my trap shut after my first comment for fear of getting bombarded with hostile replies.I'm glad you did well Reece on your overnighter (maybe you should have put that in to clear up any confusion). It still goes to show that there are unclear areas as in Rob's case of what you can and can't have in your possession after an overnight stay.It would be good if fisheries are watching and reading posts on the site to have a liason officer comment from time to time and clear up the grey areas. After all we are trying to do the right thing and this is a good medium to get the info out there.
