Expressions of interest - mid-west fishing spots
Submitted by Dean_LegendCharters on Fri, 2013-05-10 12:05
I fished professionally for Dhuies between Cervantes and Leeman (Jurien) for 15 years up until 5 years ago. I have sold my commercial licence in that area as we are concentrating on charter fishing and whale watching in the South West.
I have over 800 tried and tested fishing spots in that area that I am keen to sell. Not sure whether to sell the whole lot exclusively to one person, split into groups or sell the lot to a limited number of people.
Interested in what you all think generally and open to offers (PM me).
I would also include a couple of hours tuition on the area if needed.
Cheers
Dean

to be honest i think you
to be honest i think you would do alot better selling them in parts or groups rather then the whole package. Get more money that way. Also some might produce better then others so certain spots could be worth alot more?

The thinking behind this
The thinking behind this is that it took me 15 years work (not pleasure) to collect these spots and there must be people out there who have spent up big time on boats and equipment who want to increase their chance of catching fish. Thinking bulk rather than a couple of spots here and there. Will only sell to a limited number of people and will be up front about that to potential buyers. Will be in touch with those who have Pmd me over the weekend.

Great cash if you can get
Great cash if you can get it.
How would you guarantee not to to keep on selling the same grounds. Not like a car with the transaction being completed with the exchanging ofa physical item.
Rather like selling a DVD where you could just keep copying it and selling to different unsuspecting customers.

Good idea!
Nice entrepreneurial idea, however once you 'sell' these spots, what is going to stop the person you have sold these to from just doing the same thing. It could create a domino effect and next thing we know there is an entire market for fishing spots!! I think the only way that this would work effectively is if you sold all of the spots to one person and bound them to a contract to not pass them on, or could trust them out of good faith! Also not a personal attack on you at all, but I would be a little annoyed if I 'bought' the spots from you and after a few months of fishing each one of the spots my fishing returns hadn't changed much. Just a thing to keep in mind :)
But I like the fundamental idea! Hope you can sort something out

I would think most the good
I would think most the good spots would have had most the good fish taken from them .As you say you did this for a living ,I dont think you were leaving fish on the bite you would have made sure you cleaned them out ,I dont think to many good fish would be left .Yes your selling good ground which on its day will still give up fish ..Also I would think you would have marked pots and other people spots over the year as we all have ,this mean your selling ground others fish and worked hard to find, as well as ground you found or are these 800 spots only you have fished and no one else has or knows about ,I think not. Good luck with the sale Im sure there are people willing to give up some $$$ to catch a fish.

Well that would just take the fun out of it for me.
I am not knocking you mate, but a fisho that has to buy a spot off someone to catch a fish, isn't really a fisho. Thats just my opinion.

A liitle harsh isnt it?
If you have just moved to fishing or just started fishing that area a few proven spots would be gold. Puts you in the right area and gives you a chance to fast track the learning curve. Get to know your sounder and hopefully use that knowledge to scout around more and find new spots.
Sure saves a whole lot of time and fuel.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Nah thats not harsh at all
No one shows me where to go when I get to a new destination. I might get a general idea if I asked. To be honest I would rather find it myself. A part of fishing is finding the terrain the fish feed on, finding the fish and catching them.
Feeding someone with a silver spoon won't help them learn and certainly will not make them more competent at what they do. I hope you can understand this!!!
Honestly, how many people could this effect?? I agree with you Seaquest...

Moved
It is common practice amongst pros to sell GPS points in an area that they are leaving and not returning to another fisherman or new entry to the zone. All Dean is doing is putting the spots to some use and getting some of his investment in the area back
If the spots for sale are worth him keeping then anyone buying some will be on the money, but don't ask him for spots down south ----tongue in cheek!!!!

Do the other people that have
Do the other people that have some of these spots already get a share in your profit?
I'd be pissed if you one day decided to sell your down south spots, as we know some of yours spots are mine also.
A pro has sold spots down south and half the town has them now. No way of stopping them being shared around once you have sold them.
I remember a rec fisho tried to sell his spots in the quoka and it caused a almighty stink.

When is anyone going to get
When is anyone going to get the time to fish 800 spots? It would be a mission trying to keep track of which ones produce, what fish etc... Plus there is no guarantee that these spots haven't been raped already

Spots only mean something to
Spots only mean something to you when you have a personal account of what you have caught on them in the past.
Lets face it if you cant catch dhuies in the Jurien/Cervanties area your doing it wrong.

As someone who makes a living out of suing people.....
I'd suggest getting a written statement about the quality of what you are getting before handing any money over. The very fact that such a statement is unlikely to be forthcoming turns me off the whole idea.
I know it saves people time and fuel (assuming the spots are worth something in the first place) but then, time and fuel is part of what conserves the stocks.

interesting
heres my take on it if anyone is interested
having fished commercially for quite a long time, its certainly not uncommon to sell fishing marks. Carnarnvonite knows it as well.
If you have a multi million dollar operation, it can make more sense than wasting thousands paying crew to plod around trying to get catches up.
But in these type of sales, known as "intellectual property", the integrity of it hinges on the person selling it.
Just as (say) Ralph Sarich selling Orbial Engine fuel injection technology to another company etc-could be just gobbledegook.
If you know that Joe Bloggs is a respected fisherman with a long history of good catches, he'd be pretty unlikely to shaft someone for a few grand and blow his reputation forever.
If you need to get a lawyer involved-forget it.
And if the amount of money is such that you couldnt afford to lose it then dont
I dont know anything about Legend Charters so it wouldnt interest me as a (now) rec fisho either.
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

Gotta say I concur with you
Gotta say I concur with you Rob. They are his spots that he found he can do what he likes with them. The only thing I would point out that is if he is making an income selling data from a commercial enterprise, he's probably liable to pay tax on the sale of his spots. Goodwill that's what they call it?

That would take the fun out
That would take the fun out of it for me.
Catching a fish is just a bonus, it's the adventure of just being on the water and exploring new territory.
Having moved over from SA I'm starting all over again and that's the way it should be.
If someone is that desperate to spend money on fish you might as well buy them from the fish shop.
How much deeper would the ocean be without sponges?

Northbank You summed it up
The adventure is what counts the fish are a bonus, if I add up what I have spent I could feed my family forever in fish, but that would not let me have the fun.

Out of interest are there
Out of interest are there other Pro Wetliners still operating up in that area? If there are how do/would they feel about you selling these spots?, which i am sure at least a few would be 'their spots' too?
I mean obvisouly you now do Charter fishing off the Capes/Geo Bay region also. How would you feel if one of the long time Pro Wetliners down there decided to retire and sell of all his spots to the highest Rec fisho bidder down that way?, which may again also include some of 'your spots' that you may wish to take charter clients too?
In the end its your choice what you wish to do, and to an extent selling 'spots' on mass is a good idea, as it floods a person/persons with so many spots they cant possibly fish them all in probably a lifetime or know what each spots represents in regards to what is to be caught and if it still produces.
I have done the same with some of my Barra locations up north in the NT(which everone knows about anyway :P) giving them away for free to mates on mass. I never just give one or a couple of locations, i give someone 100's of spots to try as i know they will probably never be able to try all of them.
Good luck with whatever way you go, as either way someone will be happy, and someone will be unhappy.

Buying spots
The owner of the two boats that my son and I worked down that area bought the books off a long time wetliner who had worked the area all his life and was getting out of the industry and retiring, all up some 6000+ points from Windy harbour to just south of Mandurah.
While I was using demersal nets the spots were of no or very little advantage to me but the son was wetlining on a new boat and starting off, so to speak, blind with nothing on his GPS allowing him to make a reasonable return for him and the owner. It adds another new face to the area while another disappears so everything more or less stays static.
There had been a few from this site have approached me to buy spots but have been told that they are definitely not for sale because from past experiences where a spot was given away and then its hammered to death then given away and so on and on while pros will farm spots, example---you see 7 fish on a lump, take 3 or 4 then move on, not staying and taking the lot or playing round for sport or catch and release.

Yeah seems to be the done
Yeah seems to be the done thing within Professional Fisherman circles, which makes sense if its your livelyhood. And like you say Carnarvonite it probably doesnt really change how many fish are actually extracted because most(?) pro wetliners are probably going to farm their spots.
I guess its a different story when a spot/s comes into a Rec fishos hands, because you know its going to eventually be passed around to a family member, a good friend, another Rec fisho etc. Or they will just hammer a spot over and over again until there is nothing left then move to the next spot. Not saying all Rec Fishos hammer spots, but it does seem to be common for a Rec Fisho who doesnt have many spots or is given a spot to keep returning to the same spot/s over and over again instead of searching for new ground everytime they go out. I know some of my Dhui spots i might only get to once every two years, so i know theres no chance of me hammering them. That and i will also only fish till we have our two Dhui's then stop all together. A personnal choice thing considering the depth i fish to reduce/eliminate any catch and release mortalities(undersized Dhui's excluded as you have to release them of course).

Its a dick thing for some
Its a dick thing for some anglers.
Look at what I can catch?? Guys who outlay 60-100K for a boat think it means an instant reason for them to catch but want a return on their investment and if they cant catch this is why they will be interested in buying ground. Just like a golfer spending 5K on golf clubs and still hitting 100 for 18 holes. He goes and buys lessons.
Same with these cyclist's

hahahahahaha mate
we don't need any spots in Leeman hahahahahahah Normally old fart will go to spot up here and we never get to it as the ground is so damn good. His little black book with all his spots (keeps a record just in case he wipes the GPS by mistake) would be worth a fortune also, as he's been fishing up here for over 20yrs+ hahahah well before he had a GPS, still found good ground. Always gets fish when we go out. Even good ground around the Beggles/Nobby Head/Gumtree.
if anybody on here buys our On-site Van, old fart said he'd throw in some good spots out wide for you hahahah

I love Leeman
Leeman is a great town. The locals are friendly, the club and its members are terrific towards visitors, plenty of choice for accomidation, huge Herring and masses of soapy Mulla. Kids even start to entertain themselves without electronics!
Our family will be back.

Yeah I think over 50 % of
Yeah I think over 50 % of those spots will be barren now and if you cant catch a fish in that area you never will catch a fish .Just go out and find the ground yourself its not that hard and just because it was good 15 years ago doesn't mean shit now. A spot can go off one week and be barren the next fish move around.
