You're not alone Pete most of us have done something we'd rather forget. I've launched the boat with a dead battery and also without the bungs - neither have been repeated!

Manny years ago, an older bloke I knew back then, drove about 265 kilometers to fish, towing his 18 footer. Got up at daybreak and went to checked the bungs to discover the prop nut on the ground, and no prop. Pinched during the night. Always a good idea to carry a spare.

Not first wont be last
I forgot the winch handle once and could not go home as son would of had a tantrum. Tried all the open boat/fishing shops no luck then went home to get it only to find son still in bed so no tantrum.

went up the dam the other morning. Launched the loaded boat. Parked the car. Got half way back to the boat and realised I had left the foot pedal to the lecky motor in the garage. Being an electric only dam, the boat got put back on the trailer and fished off the bank for a couple of hours instead. haha f@#k head!!

Haha I have done this
Haha I have done this before! Such a sinking feeling when you realize what you've done!
A couple of years ago my dad had the boat ready for a days crabbing in the Mandurah estuary. He stopped at the servo to put fuel in his boat. After a few minutes of fueling up he was thinking to himself 'geeze the boat is taking more fuel than I thought it would.' That's when he realized he had the fuel nozzle in the bloody rod holder!!! He put 50 liters of fuel INTO the rod holder!!! Hahahaha!!! Totally ruined his day out because it took him such a long time to clean it up. Oh man I was in tears of laughter when he was telling me. :-)
Do the right thing and there will be fish tomorrow.

We have all done stupid things
I have overcome the key thing with a designated bright "fishing essentials" bag. Phone, wallet, emercency gear all in it. After the bungs its the essential check. Luckily the Mrs smokes and puts them in there, AND THERE IS NOOO WAY SHE WILL FORGET THAT.
I took a deckie out (good mate and dead keen to help). I normally fill the boat, then put the nozzle in a rod holder. I turned around to switch the batteries on and the overkeen deckie decided to help me fill the boat some more. Same story as Griffo but only about 1 littre. I was lucky I heard it. He was also a smoker so no smokes for the first 1hr out there until I was convinced there was no smell.

Let me share my moment of glory..........
Went to go out with the kids for a whiting bash from Hillarys on a Sat morning, leaving harbour mouth and alarm going off. No idea why but thought best to get out clear from entrance and away from the rotto ferry and million other boats to check. Donk dies, wont start.Smoke pissing from motor, check under cowling etc etc ...raise motor.......
Muffs are still on from when I thought I would run motor for a bit as hadnt taken it out for a while..(Black muffs on black motor)
. Cooked motor and a tow back by mate who was going out inn his boat ....total rebuild and $8k plus later back on the water.Thank god for insurance...Runs sweet !
Have a checklist for EVERYTHING now to take /check before we go out laminated in storeroom for the boys to go thru....and it includes, bung ,keys, epirb, fishing gear,bait.....bascially everything and in bold "Make Sure Muffs are off !!
And like Griffos old man , a mate did the same thing........fuel pissing from scupper and him looking at the bowser...not sure how much but close to 70lt.
Do it once and you will never ever ever do it again.

Muffs
I managed to persuade a couple of the Skimpy Barmaids from the Karratha Tavern to come out fishing in my tinnie.
we launched quite early as they only had half a day to spend on the water. I idled out of the public ramp and thought "lets go"! I gave it full throttle, then BANG!!!!!
The muffs were still attached and went through the prop!
No major damage, so we continued on our way.

Some classic here
Done the keys to the boat and trailer lock once and only once.
Most embarassing was when I was by fishing by myself in my new boat and after shooting the shit with a mate who was rafted up to me I turned the motor on and engaged the throttle forward.....hmmm whats that funny noise coming from the motor? Bugger I just had it serviced so I slammed the throttle full noise, sounds like the motor is struggling....and heard and then observed anchor rope flying from the bow.... I forgot to pull the anchor....
Only once :)

The guy who fixed my boat at the time said it happened a fair bit,so thought I would chuck it up to remind everyone to check !

That feeling
Tests your patience and tests your inginuity foir sure.
Recently launched at Hilliaries, only had the boat about 6 months. Park the car, get back to the boat, jump in, just as I get in the missus throws off the mooring rope and pushes away. "WTF". Quickly try and start, what do you know, the only time the thing has not started on me. Had to jump out of the boat and swin the mooring rope back to the ramp. Turned out to be a loose earth.
Got going eventually, get out the back of 3 mile and troll for a bit with no luck so decide to find a bit of ground to chuck some baits down on.....click.....shit, forgot to get the bait out the freezer. Put the Shimano Lucanus on and chuck it over the side, the missus looking at me like I've truly lost it, her eyes saying "you idiot, you don't have any bait". 1/2 hour of big sighs and I finally agree with her. Just as I'm about to admit defeat...Bang. First ever Red Emporor. Sometimes it pays to persist.

Some good ones here.Well,
Some good ones here.
Well, the family had a tight schedule and i asked to be dropped off at the Leeuin Ramp in freo. Got there, ramps closed. Dad is giving me a death stare and i start to feel a bit guilty. Driving to PW the tie down must've come loose and after every bump the tinny went up and landed on the trailer hard. every time that happened i was like F*ck F*ck F*ck! Head to Point walter, jump out, go to put the plugs in- wait what plugs. Left them and the keys at home. Now dads really giving me the shits and had to get mum to drive them up. Thats what kids are for right? haha

Immobiliser
Had a stuck cray pot in 20 foot of water off Two Rocks, took the apron off, shirt off, grabbed flippers and goggles from in cabin and over the side.
After couple of attempts the pot is free so climbed back on board only to find car keys with immobiliser in shorts pocket.
Again off Two Rocks, late afternoon launch boat with 4 new pots on board to swap with some that had been in since start of season. Sea breeze is screaming and choppy as hell when engine starts coughing and farting. Tell son to dump the pots and open engine hatch to see whats wrong, water spraying everywhere when hatch is lifted, check deck hatch and there is about 15 inches of water in there as well.
Flat out we could manage 5 knots in something that cruised on 30. Got Jeff, then 13, to take the wheel and pass close to the jetty so I could jump off without stopping the boat and for him to circle until he could drive the boat on to the trailer as soon as I got it in the water.
Once the boat was back on the trailer and up on shore, found out that darling son had taken bungs out, something that I never do. Took approx. half hour for the flow of water from bungs to slow down. Good thing it happened late in the day when no one around as I don't mind stuffing up as long as there is no one there to see it.

Had to fight a crab for me mako sunnies. Hauled my battered and bruised bod out of the rocks and rememberd my car keys and immobilisor in my soaked pants pocket. Thank god subaru make them waterproof.... too easy to do when launching or retreiving a boat.
