best ramps and worst boat ramps ????

I saw some 1 has said in a thread that woodys point is the best ramp in the state I haven't used it but have used plenty of others through out the state my best would be point perron my worst would bella bella which to call it a ramp is really a lie ,if I get enough feed back I will put together a list of ramps conditions and hazards boatys face at them and put it on the site

haven't used it manly just used ramps up in the N/W I used to think the public ramp in dampier was good utill I saw the P/P ramp the karratha back beach ramp is better than it was 20 years ago but still gets full of mud and needs clearing every year or so we should get a list or ramp conditions together so fishos know what they are facing before they get to a spot I will put the list together if we get enough feed back

Couldn't agree with you more about Hamelin. We tried last weekend but gave up quickly due to the surge and went back to Augusta.
Windy Harbour can be shocking also with the surge and rocks??

Hamelin has no jetty and no protection from the shore break and swells. It can have a fairly nasty side wash which has a tendency to wash the boat off the trailer.
Summer is normally ok but give it a miss during winter. Weed can be a major problem also.

Funniest Home Videos
Have seen stuff that would win major prizes on Funniest Home Videos on the Hamelin ramp and usually its stupidity or ignorance behind it.
Always wondered why people launch their boats there when the pro fishermen haven't gone out, they are the ones that use the ramp all the time and when they don't go there is definitely something coming.

I recon the Rockingham council did a good job there it was built before I got to the area how ever I know for fact they have been funded to have a channel dredged out from the bent street ramp and all they do is talk about it and don't do it I intend running for council at the next elections to make sure it happens I am retired these days at 53 and intend doing all I can do to help fishos and I don't want money wasted on stupid things like a study into road conditions in Germany compared to here (just a junket for councillor's)

Batavia marina Gero is a good one, tonnes of free parking, 3 ramps, rarely any stress (that Ive seen), load out pontoon and jetty, finger jetties and relatively safe parking overnight

Batavia is a great ramp!!
Plenty of parking, good jetties and best of all it has toilets and hot showers!!These are a godsend after a trip out and as a refresher before the drive to Perth.

If there is a big surge Canal Rocks is a horrible ramp.
But if there is no surge or very little its alright with an experience launch crew.
My all time favourite ramp is Quindalup. I have a 4wd and a not so big boat so its shallowness has never been a problem for me. :)
But Port Geographe is a good one too, especially if I am going fishing solo or its a bit too rough to leave the missus holding the boat at Quindalup while I /park/get the trailer :P.

Yeah seen the new Old Duns
Yeah seen the new Old Duns Boat Ramp. Looks a heap load better than what was there. Bit deeper so better for the bigger boats and 2wd cars, as opposed to Quindalup at low tide or with sand over the ramp. Downside is it still has limited parking and on nice summer day you get all the families down there and kids swimming and all other water activities around there.
Think I just prefer less people in the water when launching and retrieving. Well mainly retrieving, as i usually launch too early for families to be about :)
But hopefully it will take a bit of pressure off the Quindalup ramp on busy days.
Its good too that Quindalup boat ramp now has the overflow limestone carpark for busy days.

old Duns
Old duns is to shallow, tried it once and won't go back. I'm used to not getting my feet wet when launching or retrieving, so will keep to Geo marina.

Hey Seaquest I meant compared to the very low low tides you can get in summer at Quindalip,(were the concrete end of the ramp is basically on the shore), or if there is sand all over it, the old Dunsbrough ramp is better if you don't have a 4wd.
My opinion only, but like I said it doesn't affect me as I have a 4wd and my Ally boat is only 1350kg on a single axle trailer, so even the lowest low tides at Quindalup doesn't affect me. :)

That ranger has a big rep around the freo area, totally bad attitude, puffed out chest etc
just the sort of jerk attracted to that job, and just the sort we as the public dont need or want.( will someone from council just retire the noob!)
Also Isnt Lewuin very expensive to park?
Me personally find paying at any ramp a insult, after all the taxs, charges, fees, licences etc etc
fishers and boaters pay allready.
Not picking on anyone but I dont see cyclists paying direct fees for cycle paths and then paying a toll to use them or upkeep them
or other sports facilitys that we as tax payers ( rightly so) provide for everyone to use, then charging people a daily fee to use.
worst......local --2 rocks on a busy day( hell by the sea) moore river (its sorta there isnt it? next to the north groyne) and non local canal rocks and hamelin in surge.

East Freo/Leeuwin ramp
I had a humorous crack at the noob in question one and day re the high parking fees & he justified it with "all council money - no state gov funding" etc... But your right fees are over the top at East Freo ramp. The ramp itself used to be average but the recent upgrades have improved it and the addition of a 3rd launch/retrieve lane & helps to alleviate congestion. You can also get a fast running tide flowing thru so that's something to be aware of there also.

North of Alcoa
The little ramp just north of Alcoa (Naval Base ) has claimed a boat or two. Nice to launch from in the morning and a nightmare to retreive from with a SW chop in the arvo.
Mindaries is a good ramp with a wash down area too. Can get busy tho, but what metro ramp dosn't have peak hours ?

Ya cant whinge about norwester ramps cause it keeps the pillagers/rapists out. its bad enough fifo's and grey nomads ignore size and bag limits then we get southerners whingin about our facilities. I've had to winch my boat on a trailer then snatch it outta the creek or fight a 6m tide solo. cleaning facilities cause problems - clean ya fish in the bay and keep ya skeletons for crab bait/fisheries/pets. As for balla balla think yourself lucky you can fish there before they turn it into a port. Plus popular places fisheries/DOT constantly patrol and book people for minor infringments.

Ramp Closure
The Dept of Transport are going to close the old ramp in the fishing boat harbour here in Carnarvon once the dredge has finished clearing the Pelican Point channel.
Its a real shame, you only have to look at the number of locals who don't use the lovely new ones to tell you what they think of it.

So typical of local councils John. Down here they have just okayed spending 300 something thousand on new facilities for launching,but they will be the Stirling street ramp and the power boat club.Not the main Casurina ramp(seems to have been forgotten).Problem with the other ramps is that you have to go through a narrow channel one way only that we call the plug ,under a defunct railway bridge and a traffic bridge,both so low to the water that you cant have rods in rocket launchers and your antenna have to be down or they hit the bridge even on a low tide. Cant work it out why they would do that.I have sent heaps of emails to our local member re Casurina and have recieved all the usual crap responses.
Have to agree Hamelin Bay and then Canal Rocks are the worst 2 ramps i have ever used.

I've used the Hamelin bay ramp all my life, and launched dingies as well as large boats, including my 26ft Fury. All i can say is if your not confident, dont do it. if its not DEAD calm and no swell, dont do it especially if you cannot drive on.

they got out only just before the wave in the last pic completely pushed the boat off the ramp.
Over the years we would have helped 100's of people on this ramp, Scano can confirm that, and some of them just had no clue. One of our last trips a guy in a Poly boat tried to drive on, on a non drive on Trailer. The poly ended back to front up the concrete ramp with the moto up near the winch.... work that one out.
Plenty of Injuries as well, with people having the nose of their boat come down on their feet on a concrete ramp, people being squashed between trailer and boat, people slipping on the ramp or falling off the side and busting feet / arms

It pays to have a LOOOOOONG
It pays to have a LOOOOOONG draw bar down in Hamelin Bay. Even with the tinny on, in 1m of swell, I ended up with a graze on my leg. Wifey sat in the car ready to go as soon as the boat was on the trailer.

Other than facilities, fees
Other than facilities, fees etc.. I reckon the best ramps are the ones where even if you don't need help someone offers it. I recall when I first started boating it used to fill me with dread the whole getting the boat on /off etc... So I make a point now of extending an offer of assistance. 90% of the time it's not taken up but you can tell it's well received. I've had times where I'm 5th in line and the bloke at the ramp is struggling & #'s 2,3 & 4 are bagging the guy for holding them up. Easiest way to speed things up is go give the bloke a hand.

I'm with you on that - I've had my first boat for a year - and at first its not easy especially in a crosswind. I'm at a not so busy ramp but I've had every reaction from people getting shitty, laughing at me, waiting patiently and by far the fewest helping me out.
Now I'm pretty confident handling my boat singlehanded but fortunately I'm not very worried about what people think about me - or I mighta given up...
