Where to go? - Easter 2014

Thinking about doing a trip somewhere next easter for about 10days or so. Wanting to tow my 6.5m 225hp trailcraft with me.

Usually head up to exmouth but last trip (2yrs ago) with my old boat, we were nailed by the sharks at almost every spot inside and outside of the reef. Got that bad that we actually cut our trip short and havent returned since! is the shark situation still as bad?

What other options are there for a boat of this size? Thinking maybe harthog? sharkbay area? I'm going to rule out Kalbarri due to the crossing especially if the swell is up.

I like the idea of somewhere similar to exmouth where you can escape the wind by fishing the lee side if it decides to blow too..

any thoughts?

cheers

We were up at exmouth in

We were up at exmouth in June, and sharks were a major problem still, every spot we went to we lost good fish.

Can get past the sharks in

Mon, 2013-11-18 13:21

Can get past the sharks in Exmouth. The gulf is pretty suiet from shark as well as past the Murians.

We go up every year and find the sharks hard work arounbd ningaloo and the Murians themselves (Although had an abolute ball a couple days in on the inside of the Murians with Trev's, queenies, mackies and Spangles.)

Up around peak the sharks seem better, we were getting reds without losing one to a shark.

Only issue is travelling obviously, but given your size boat thats no issue.

Easter 2014

Horrocks Beach, Port Gregory, Kalbarri (with common-sense the mouth is quite safe), less distance to tow the boat, but you had better book accommodation early. My recommendation would be Horrocks or Port Gregory, great fishing but not the big crowds.

that boat could be a challenge getting back out of the water at either of those spots its 4wd only and can be pretty soft at times.  Go back in the search function I think Bodie had a bit of grief there with his boat although it was quite a big boat.

I havent done horrocks but I have launched port gregory heaps but my boat with gear in it is around 1.5 tonne and you need to be quick as the trailor sinks quickly onj some parts of the beach.  Also depending on the tide and beach formation the back of the car can get a bit wet to get enough water under the hull when launching.

If your not sure about beach launching or dont have the car for it I would consider Kalbarri over gregory/horrocks.  Some of the locals on here can give you some pointers in getting out through the mouth, your boat is more than capable

Yep port gregory is a prick

Yep port gregory is a prick of a place, but awesome fishing

We were there in april a few years ago and it blew a hard 20+ knot S-SW wind the whole time. Ended up having to just push out into it and travelled about 9-10 mile but killed it everytime we got out, bagging out in under and hour each time. I'd love to get 5 days good weather there!

Launching for you with an ali boat and 4WD should be quite straight forward. The beach is hard so can travel along it to the north a little to launch. Just dont stop reversing back into the water until you well far enough in. With an ali boat its much simpler, we also launched a 22ft razorline with no dramas what so ever, as well as retrieving. However my Glass boat which is 3.5t...she sank when reversing in.... was a bit of a mission. To retrieve i drove back to Kalbarri.

The locals at Gregory have

The locals at Gregory have tractors and will happily launch/retrieve you for a block of carlton mid. Not worth the hassle with a heavy boat. There is also moorings you can maybe use if you speak to the right people and the weather is ok- saves launching every time you wanna go out. Like Bodie said fishing is hot threre and its only 30mile over to the islands. Ring the Caravan Park and they will put you in touch with the right people. You will be fine at Kalbarri with your boat if you watch for a bit and see how the swells break and how others are getting in/out.

With only three days between easter monday and anzac day on friday easter is  perfect for 10 day getaway next year. Lookout Abrolhos!!

 Cheers guys, Gregory and

Cheers guys, Gregory and horrocks sounds like a bit of a handful with a bigger boat, not keen on getting the local tractor to pull me out each day. Will love to try it one day tho. I guess it's close enough to do over a long weekend anyway.

Thanks bodie, never tried peak island myself. Sure does look fishy out ther tho. There's a couple of Islands past murions which don't look excessively far. Outtrim patches ,Sunday Island any good? As long as the sharks aren't too much of a pain like the west side then i think I'd be happy to get back up to exmouth again.
