VHF problems
My first post, hope it works better than my VHF
I have a GME GX600 VHF marine transceiver which is not transmitting and receiving on the channel it is tuned too.
I only use VHF as safety back up when I can not log on 27 mHz.
About 2 months ago I tried to log on using channel 73 VHF and was promptly told of by tugs working barges in Cockburn Sound.
Last Wednesday I requested Rockingham Sea Rescue for a radio check for my VHF using the 27 mHz for the request.
The Rockingham radio operator eventually found my VHF using channel 13 for his transition while my VHF was tuned to channel 73.
I spent the rest of the day with my VHF on scan mode and found sea rescue conversations coming through on VHF channel 14.
When I returned to Woodman’s Point I logged of using channel 14 VHF and was told by the operator that he was receiving me loud and clear on channel 73.
If you were on the water on Wednesday you may have heard these conversations.
Next time I am on the water I will request a radio check on channel 16 VHF.
Has any had the same problem with a GME GX 600 and found a solution to it.
Also dose any know the listening times only for Channel 16

ch16
channel 16 is for emergency use and is monitored by Sea Rescue groups and others.
16 can be used to call for logging in purposes and the monitor should ask you to move to ch72 or whatever they use in you area to confirm details etc. This I think you already know.
Sorry I cant help you with your problem with ch 73. Sounds a bit odd.
Good luck sorting it out.
At least you are trying to do the right thing by logging your details etc.
Cheers

channel 16 can be used for
channel 16 can be used for any vessel to vessel/shore contact as well as emergency use, just dont continue a converstaion on there.
Its perfectly acceptable to use for initial contact purposes in any marine (not sure on aviation) situation.

Problem
From the sound of it the problem is in your set and it needs a technician to have a look at the channel selector.

VHF Ch 16 silence periods - 3
VHF Ch 16 silence periods - 3 min duration commencing on the hour & half hour.
Regarding the VHF issue you describe I suggest you contact WA's GME agent Phone: (08) 9455 5744 and and put it to them.
Hopefully they can advise a fix over the phone coz unless it's under warranty you'd probably be better off buying new.
I had an issue with mine, though a bit diff, in that I was receiving but couldn't transmit so I took it to them in Canning Vale then they sent it to SA about a week later quoted about 4/5 of the price of a new unit. I asked them to send it to me via mail but they wanted $'s. It was 3yrs old and had come with the boat when I bought it. So I told them to bin it and bought new. Good luck.

I'm with Canarvonite - channel selector/frequency issue
I work on the barges abd we use VHF ch 74 so if you had 73 selected then that's twice you've been on the wrong frequency.
As another check, Fremantle Ports uses VHF ch 12, 13, and 6 for ship ops. Don't call them but you could listen in and change channels to again determine if you're on the right frequency/channel selection.
