South Coast Marlin

 G'day,

I have been Game fishing in the Exmouth and Dampier areas for over ten years. I live in Albany and over the last few years have had the urge to get out wide and see if what I could raise from the depths off Albany and Denmark! I am interested to see if anybody else has tried this and if so how did you go? There has been Mackerel, Mahi Mahi and Cobia caught down here for at least the last 3 years could there be a run of Billfish we are missing out on?? Interested to know your thought!!

Billfish have also been caught down that way as well as the Mack's and Mahi.

You also get some big SBT (Barrel size) that come down wide of the west coast and turn the corner for Vic and Tas.

You never know

You would have to be seriously lucky I think but stranger things have happened! I know they had a few marlin wash up down south this year so you never know but the chances of being in the right place at the right time with the right gear are slim!!

 Hi Tim,

We have come across some large SBT's over the years eating salmon off Albany. What time of year do you think is the best to put some hours in. I am thinking Feb/March when I assume the water is warmest. I also wonder which of the Marlins would be the most likely we could come across off Perth they mainly get Stripeys during the season. I wouldn't be suprised if there were smaller rat Blacks running with the current also!

We have tried for Broadies off Exmouth with mixed results. Would need to pick your nights to have a dip at them off the South Coast with a smallish boat. Be a great thing to pull off for a recreational fishermen I reckon!!

they are really only of Exmouth in big numbers around Sept

Albany-wintertime is the go, not sure about summer as we werent there then ever.

You only need to get to the edge, they are close there. They may be inside but we never fished inside 500 mteres or so.

I know it's miles away but

I know it's miles away but we used to get bills off the continental shelf out from flinders island in Tasmania. Same sort of latitude.
