Hey Ron, I'm sure you'd be
Hey Ron, I'm sure you'd be wearing all the safety gear while you'r melting this, but just make sure that you NEVER take them off, lead can explode from the least amount of water trapped inside the scrape/ingots.
Another tip is to leave the mold to cool down a little after every few casts, especially with these big sized ones. This will avoid the mold/aluminum being deformed, and helps setting the cast quicker.
Well done there mate ;)

Good job
Good job Ron. I see you had to modify the base of the kiln, I had to do the same thing to mine, They definately make it a lot safer to pour the lead. I also found it was a bit slow to pour the large moulds, so i just drilled the aloy nossell out 1mm larger wich did the trick for me .
Cheers Grant..

Modify
Yeah the base looks good, I dodged mine up but might have to do the same as Ron, it looks pretty sturdy.
Is there a patent in place Ron?

Made one first
I made one on the lathe first. I didn't want to wreck the original aluminium nossle. I found the one i made ok, but because it was steel it would cool too quick and block up all the time. I put the alloy one back in and just drilled it out to 2mm and it worked fine. I then drilled it again to 3mm and it flowed very fast but had a slight drip.
I would carefully drill it out by 0.5mm at a time untill you get the effect you want. You can buy replacement nossles as well.

cool mate, might try it at
cool mate, might try it at 2mm,
the 16oz double mould i only pour 1 half at a time because of that reason, its working well and prob take the same time anyway.
i find them layering slightly, so a bit faster pour sounds the go.
wont be using wheel weights anymore either, (to dirty), got a good supplier of old lead flashing now so should be sweat.
cheers

sinkers or ingots
what are the round shaped objects at the front of the photo on the extreme right hand side, are they some kind of sand sinker or are they ingots you use in the furnace

they are ingots mate,
i had 50+kg of wheel weights, tried doing it in the lee pot but to slow and messy,
so i got the big pot out on the 3 ring gas burner and made the ingots out of the muffin tins.
the lee pot works exellent with clean lead.
cheers

Scrap Metal suppliers
Hi Bodie - I use to get roofing sheets from scrap metal suppliers. Works much better than wheel lead ... safer, easy to melt (almost pure), and best part is that it doesn't set as quickly as the other stuff.
PM me if you need anything.
Cheers

Just to reinforce this
Lead vapour is Toxic as hell. Not the slow poisoning you get from lead paint etc, which causes problems with our blood and nerves, but if enough is enhaled it can cause death and anaemia, shock and other nasties. Just google acute lead poisoning.

Great work, Saving some
Great work, Saving some serious $$. I have always thought about doing it and making leadheads and stuff but always thought it was pretty dangerous!
