Rod Repair?

Hey guys, just wondering with repairng guides I'm guessing it can be done diy but where would you get the guides and what tools etc would you need to replace them?  or if it would be easier to get it done somewhere?

Cheers

rod repairs/ building

is an art in its self and theres plenty of traps for the inexperienced. I just get my local builder to do any work i need done. But if your keen im sure getting set up would be rewarding.

Check out rodbuilders.org cool site for ideas and info.

www.anglersworkshop.com are good to deal with when ordering.

Cheers boys I thought it'd be easier to get done than try it myself.  And also what is different between roller guides and normal guides?

Rod Repairs

By the time you get the correct guide(s), bindings, tools and correct epoxy etc for a repair job a good tackle store can do it cheap but without the hassle.

Roller guides for billfish/ fast running fish, the rest just stick to guides and ring tip (low maintenance)

Please consider the situation carefully.

Wife bought me a Diawa Firewolf back in the 90s. Caught thousands of trout and a few Murray cod with it. Got it into the salt over here and it's runners we're a lot shitty after 5 or so years. Got Ian Baliey to put new runners on it. He warned me it would cost more than a better rod would cost. He charged $80 for the 7 runners and labour, fair price I thought. It was & is a very special rod to me.

I wouldn't replace runners on a rod unless it is very special rod to you. If rod not special, buy a new one.

I made my own Alvey reel medium surf rod. All fibreglass MT 7132 with Fuji lumo shock ring guides - very standard in the 90s. I have used it for hours and its my go to rod off the beach. Got the local shop to glue bindings though (no rotisserie).

A single runner repair by the local tackle shop sensible. Good way to meet the crew.

A good paring knife and care

Mon, 2013-06-24 20:09

A good paring knife and care will safely remove the thread around a guide and you can use yor fingernail to get the rest off. A light sand will also help. The biggest issue with a DYI is when you put the thread back on the new guide you need proper rod Epoxy which has some flex in it. Plus you really should use proper thread.

As stated above its really better to have someone else do it unless you actually want to get into rod building yourself.

Interested

Mon, 2013-06-24 21:03

I have been thinking about getting into it as my young bloke has shown some interest in rod building and to be honest it's something I have had in the back of my mind for a while so might shell out some cash for a rod wrapping machine soon I'm lucky enough to have a mate who builds rods so I got a bit of tuition for free who knows bunny maybe in a bit of time I could build something like some of the creations you have built quality looking gear.

 Bunny is right it is

Tue, 2013-06-25 21:18

Bunny is right it is addictive, i've made 2 good rods and 4 kiddies rods for practice and i'm now doing repairs and well depending on what youve done to what guide and whether the rod has fancy art with it it can cost a bit of cash and time. Built a rod myself as a 10kg pitchbait rod and my budget of $250 (what i could have brought a nice live fibre 10-15kg rod for) turned into $450 but i am very proud of it. a good blank and good hardware soon add up, can't beat economys of scale.

I replaced and upgraded all

Wed, 2013-06-26 03:36

I replaced and upgraded all the guides on my favourate rod a couple of years back. Did it over winter when the weather was terrible and I wasnt heading out anyway. I found it prety enjoyable. Could have had a shop do it for me for about the same price and heaps less effort, but it came up ok and I was stoked with the result. Would I do it again though, not sure.
