Rod for casting lures and baits
hi all,
I'm looking at ideas for a rod. I want this for casting mostly lures off the rocks, jetty, beach etc. It won't be used on a boat at all (I have my boat fishing well and truly covered).
I don't do a lot of rock fishing around perth, but figure i'm mostly going to encounter tailor, bonito, and perhaps the odd mulloway (if i'm lucky). as well as the usual whiting, herring and the likes.
I want to cast lures on the most part (as stated above), but also like to soak a bait. A 2 piece rod is a must for storage and transportation. I'd most likely pair it to either a 4000 or 5000 real that i've got now.
I'd give a budget between $80 and $140. I do prefer cork hand grips, but EVA is ok also.
What do you have, or what would you recommend.
cheers,
Justo

Prob the first thing to
Prob the first thing to figure out is the length, the line rating and what the max you want to cast it (though the last two will be interrelated somewhat).
The starlo stix's were popular for that use (9'), although theres probably a few more options out there now.
Personally I like using a squidding rod cause its super fun, but I don't case over 25g with it. Have a 9' 30lb rod for bombing out heavier poppers though.

well that's the thing I
well that's the thing I guess. not too sure on the length. all my rods currently are between 5'6" and 6'6". Mainly because 90% of my fishing is boat based.
I figure something between 7' and 9' would probably be the right length, but really I don't know.
Line rating, well I currently use 20lb and 30lb braid on my 4000 and 5000 reels, and 8lb on my 2500...
Cast weights, well most lures aren't going to be over 20gm (I wouldn't think anyway), and the rods I have now I struggle to cast my lures more than 15-20m (perhaps an understatement, but seems about it). But, I want to be able to chuck out a bait too.

Shimano Catana Spin - they
Shimano Catana Spin - they work great with small lures and aren't super expensive.
Also remember a 2Oz richter is in fact 54 odd grams at 27.4 grams to the Oz

Rods
9 foot is a good general length, propably in the 75g catagory. I have a shimano Aero graphite that I use with a daiwa 5500 z with 20 lb braid and it casts a country mile. A lighter rod would be better for your lures and a heavier one for you baits. This is in the middle. The Catana's are good rods as well.

Definitely look at the
Definitely look at the Shimano Catana 902 spin rod. I recently bought one and so far I'm quite happy with it. A bit of length helps when landbased, for casting distance and to help avoid snags in rocks. Probably not a rod for casting baits with 3oz of lead, but seems quite nice for lures, lightly weighted mulies, can do floats for herring, etc.

You will struggle to throw
You will struggle to throw tailor baits & enough weight to hold bottom in the surf with the catana or Starlo Stix, both have a maximum cast weight of 45g. Even with really smooth casting you can feel that a mulie & 54g of lead is really pushing the rod to it's limits. Both are excellent for your primary purpose of throwing lures around though & are available well under your budget. The Catana has EVA grips but will cast lures down to about 8g pretty well. The Starlo has cork grips but struggles with lures under it's recommended minimum cast weight if 15g. I've had both rods & there really isn't much to choose between them. I reckon you should take your reel into a shop & see which one you like best.
Just because I smile & nod does not mean I believe the crap coming out of your mouth.
All people have the right to stupidity but some abuse the privilege.

I have a Starlo Stix 1062 surf, this might suit.
Rated cast weight of 15-90gm. But i would stick to 30gm+.
I've lobbed baits with it too.
Cork grips and around the $100mark

Daiwa seajigger 315
I paid $180 for mine on sale, sensitive enough in the tip for whiting and ballsey enough to drag in a small eagle ray. Put on a 3000 daiwa or 4000 shimano plus some saltiga surf braid in 15lb and have a combo u will never put down.

Wilson Palegic Spin or
Wilson Palegic Spin or Shimano Raider can't go wrong with either of these, both go for just over $100. I have the Wilson and have also used the raider. Both very very good rods.I can cast upto 85g on the wilson, can throw out a whole snook with it.
