Reel Care.

Just been going over my collection of reels and was wondering how other persons look after their "Lower end "reels.
One of my reels has some corrosion and dents (small) on the spool. I have removed the line and am dressing the damage so that the surface is smooth. Am wondering what others do to prevent corrosion down in the spool area covered with line. Do you wipe a corrosion preventative over the spool rim that the line travels over.
Looking at second hand reels both on here and on Gum tree and noticed the reels also had damage to this surface, surely this surface would damage the line on every cast. What's you say on this.

Pretty much once a spool lip
Pretty much once a spool lip is damaged by impact or corrosion it's had the Richard in which case you can order a spare spool, it doesn't only damage the line but reduces your casting ability, a little nail polish might help. A quick water spray after each trip should prevent corrosion here, under the line lay however regular line change (yearly?) should help.

Inox mx3
If I dress up the spool and then spray Inox mx3 before winding on the braid, will this effect the braid?
INOX-MX3 Lubricant, Corrosion Inhibitor - This product is similar to popular water displacement products EXCEPT that it does not contain silicone or kerosene based solvents, etc.

Carnauba wax on the spool
Carnauba wax on the spool prior to spooling up helps. Braid absorbs moisture so is hard to keep the salt out even when rinsing. I wouldn't use Inox. It would also increase the chances of line slip.

Just an idea
After playing around with the line in the spools, topping up, transferring etc., I had the idea that the handles of two broken rods joined together inline face to face, would make a handy device for reel maintenance work, winding reel to reel etc., anyone use such a device?

Not a bad idea for swapping
Not a bad idea for swapping line around and using the other end that hasn't seen the light of day rather than replacing the lot at a cost (maybe a little backing needed if a little has been lost)!!
Have a few broken rods lying around too.

Not bad Paul H.
But what you're saying is what I was doing, taking mono off reels, cleaning servicing, putting on backing to make up for loss etc. And while I was winding on by hand to a spool or using a piece of dowling across a chair to support the spool, was when I thought an old reel and two rods joined would make life easier.
I know some of the guys have made machines for similar tasks (putting line on spools) but I'm not up to that at this stage.

You're idea not mine - I just realised what you were doing. But thanks for sharing :-)
