Prawning in the Swan River
Submitted by Silk200611 on Tue, 2009-02-10 13:18
Hi all.. I'm new to Fishwrecked.com,.. I think it a great site.
I remember the other day, That when i was a lot younger my family and friends would go down near the yacht club in Applecross and go pull the prawn net, We did this at least two or three times a year.. I cant remember the last time we did, would have to be over ten years ago now or more like 15 now..
Dose anyone still do this or is there any prawns left in the river?? and also thinking nets may have been band in the river..
not sure what to think anyone can fill me in on this topic??
Thanks Brad

Prawns?!?!?!
Welcome on board Brad.
Go for it! The river needs a few blowies and jellys removed
When I was a boy..........Yeah, it used to be a great past time, hauling the old drag net around in the shallows, drawing straws to see who got the deep side...and usually more chance of standing on a flatty or crab
....arrrgh.
We just don't get the numbers of river prawns anymore...pollution, blowies eating them all...who knows. I do know, that over the last year, whilst scuba diving in the river at night, I am seeing alot more river prawns. So, hopefully, they could be on the rise again.
There are still very good numbers of King prawns in the river, but they don't get as big as they used to (10 years ago - my longest prawn was 36cm!) as there are alot more divers chasing them around.
Dabbing from the boat with an out going tide early winter will be your best chance.
Cheers Pete

Prawnies
Welcome to the site Brad.
Remember those days of dragging the prawn net well and always getting a good feed. Not too sure these days, but sounds like some good advice from Pete.
Cheers,
Adam

Yeah the good old days
I hear about people taking 3 or 4 buckets each of prawns home on a regular basis in the "good old days" - sustainable, not likely as evidenced by the current number of people dragging the swan for prawns - nil.
Ruined by greed.
