Prawn Stars
Hi All,
Have been getting out on the Swan and getting a few prawns and having a great time. We anchor up early in our little tinny and get a position so we are all set when he run starts.
Over the last few years I have noticed that some people have forgotten the rules and seem to think it is ok to drive in front of you at anchor and sit up current and catch what ever was heading in your direction or coming right next to you with lights on full so you can't see a thing.
The other night down in the swan a twat in a centre console called "Slick" came right up along side us with their underwater lights on and massive roof spotties shining right in our eyes. I asked the guys if they could turn their roof lights off or perhaps just move a little further away to which I got some very rude replies asking if I owned the "f%$#ing river" no , I don't own the river but I do have common courtesy and try to be a polite human. They then proceeded to say that they didn't have any light on above the water? I am sure the four massive spot lights on your hardtop would count as light? When we drew their attention to the fact that the lights on their roof were in fact there, an on, they asked if we were jealous of their lights cause we couldn't afford them? Seriously this is what they said.
They then proceeded directly up current form us and tried to be smart asses until we started our outboard on our tiny tinny about to go and introduce them to some manners.
I am not sure if it a lack of respect, a lack of care or just a lack of education but be warned "slick" if you try that on again you will be seeing us at the boat ramp with an unhappy crab and some big spotlights. There is a thing in life called karma and when you see us in our normal boats you might think twice about your attitude and who your talking too

Welcome to prawning on the river unfortunately.
You see it every night, every year..
thing is, people dont realise there are many other places to prawn on the river and dont have to park on top of each other, but as usual, when people see a heap of boats close together (similar to the pinky season in cockburn sound) they automatically assume this must be the place to go.
How have you been going Southpoint? Any prawns about? From others I've spoken too say its been a bit of a fizzer of a season.

Ok, it was good early but pretty low numbers now. Need some bloody rain to flush them down. I just love getting out there but so frustrating at times with peoples attitudes

We need to form a Fishwrecked vigilante group. A quick post via the iPhone and I'm sure a few of us would be happy to make a quick visit. Cheers for naming the pricks boat my eyes are open and on the prowl!

mate thats no good
i am "river based" so every trip out for me means a run down the river to freo, leaving early morning is always ok (except for some rowers who think everyone should stay off the river until they are done) but coming home in the afternoon is almost always d1ckhead city -cant believe how many people think 20-25 knots is close enough to 8!, there are the guys who abuse you because they dont understand the give way rules (my favourite) then there is the guys that pass you in the 8 knots zone (to be in front of course) then slow down -bigger boats dont manuover easily at low speeds (rudders in effect useless) and there was a alum hardtop called "Sunrise" (or similar) that nearly became two after pulling in front of me and turning broadside a few months back - he was lucky i was able to get reverse in time as there was no way i could have moved to port or starboard to avoid him - i put his safetey ahead of my gearboxes - a thanks would have been nicer than the finger!
anyhoo -thats life on the swan - and yes Southy -i do believe in karma :-)

I’ve had the same happen to me. If I head down in the dinghy (which I prefer) people seem to think its ok to anchor as close as they want. I’ve even had to move as my bow was almost touching their stern after their anchor dragged and refused to move. Although if I get the bigger boat down they stay clear. As Bodie says after a couple of seasons I’ve learnt to stay well clear of the crowds. Fewer boats and more prawns.

nothings changes. was happening 25 years ago and it will only get worse. its rhe reason l dont bother anymore. you xan actually get pretty close to other boats iff your all staggered. but as you say its the late comers that jump in from of you. the other factor now is the guys who dont anchor and just motor around. have done it m y self but try not to shine lights in eyes.
