Fly or spin??

Wed, 2013-02-06 18:26

Makes a difference. With Spin try the Warren River, but you are more likely to get nailed by Redfin. Not bad as you can catch as many as you can carry, you are not allowed to release them. No C&R. And they taste good.

Fly might be harder with a backcast needed. The Dam (name has leeched out off my brain) on the Rd past the trout hatchery is worth a go, but I have found you have to have a little luck on your side.

Best time is for a month as

Best time is for a month as soon as the season opens & for the last 4-6 weeks before the season closes. There are trout to be had through the middle of summer but you have to work harder for them.

Big Brook Dam holds trout & is easy to fish but doesn't produce as well as it used to. Lots of Redfin in there as well but most are on the small side.

Moons Crossing is easy to access from Spring Gully Road at the Pemberton end or from Moons Crossing Road off Wheatley Coast Road. Go for a short walk upstream & you will find several large pools that hold both trout & Redfin.

Rooney's Bridge on South West HWY. Park on the northern side of the bridge well off the road. About 50m north of the bridge you will see a 4x4 track heading east down a steep slope. At the bottom of that short slope is a nice pool that i pulled a few yearlings out of about 3 weeks ago. On the opposite of the HWY is another 4x4 track. Walk along this for about 100m & you will get to a fork. Take the fork to the left (downhill) & follow that track another 50m, there's a nice pool down there & a campsite as well.

Lefroy Brook, take the Pemberton Northcliffe Rd until you get to the turn off to The Cascades (Glauder Rd). Do not take the next turn to The cascades, instead keep following Glauder until you get to the bridge over the Lefroy. You have to do some bush bashing but there's good little pools to fish in the area. There's lots of snags & the pools are small so your casting needs to be spot on & you need to be prepared to lose plenty of gear.

I don't know the name of the bridge but there is one on Glouster Road that crosses the Warren. Theres a big long pool on the eastern side of that bridge & you can walk along there for a good distance casting lures the whole way.

There are also several spots along Heartbreak Trail (off Old Vasse Road) that you can try to fish, mostly for reddies but there are trout there to. I like to park at the first car park & then hike along the trail next to the river picking snags to cast to. There's plenty of solid Redfin in this area so it's great spot to go get a feed.

i hope that helps you out a bit.

Your best planning a trip

Thu, 2013-02-07 21:31

Your best planning a trip this season for April or May. There should have been a bit of rain by then to help bring the water levels back up & get the fish going but not so much that they are flooded & difficult to fish.

 Yeh i've always done well

Yeh i've always done well around easter/anzac day on redfin in the Warren. If your happy goin for reddies, get some soft plastics, small jigheads, and hire a canoe. Go explore the logging tracks that go in there, can get most places with 2wd.
