Live Bait
Submitted by salmonwanter on Mon, 2013-07-01 15:51
I go fishing regularly on Busselton Jetty but I really want to start going for bigger fish and not just the small stuff.
I recently bought a big reel put heavy line on it. I have everything to catch big fish but I need to learn how to catch live bait. (I even bought an aerator for the live baits and no I'm not rich).
The bait catcher from BCF didn't work so how do I use them.
Any tips on what to use to catch them?
Do I use the bait catcher rig or baits?
Where on the jetty?
How long will the baits survive?
Thankyou

live bait
I fish the busso jetty quiet a bit had good success few weeks ago landing 2 big mulloway in two nights. to answer all your questions drop a bucket down fill up with water then stick bait pump on the side and turn on as for catching the baits I use 4 hook bait rigs size 8 hook .5oz sinker and a small amount of squid each hook we mainly run that rig for yakkas and herring but if you want slimy mackerel or pike then use two hook and cube mulies that will catch them as for live baiting single hook either behind head or down near tail running ball sinker and away ya slimy mackerel, pike and herring will get about half hour I find where yakkers you will get 2-3 hours if correctly rigged we also change water in bucket every hour to

i don't fish busso but fish e
i don't fish busso but fish e shed and i use a small bait rig with pieces of prwn and usually catch a few yellowtail and herring or you can use small sinker and a tiny hook with a small piece of any bait and that also is effective also catch slimies with it or i=use a small circle hook with a big chunk of mulie for snook
and do live pumps cost that much i got mine for $10
anywhere hope this helps but this is what i preferably use of e shed

Mate when I used to jetty
Mate when I used to jetty fish I had a plastic gargage bin that I converted to a livewell,Had a airator that you would use on a boat and a length of garden hose that was put in to the water and ran the thing off a motor bike battery whole setup probably cost me $80 and could put squid, yakkas, herring in there and they would be alive till the end of the fishing session 8 hrs plus in which used to toss them back to swim away if there were any left,As for catching them use the good old bait catcher rigs with a bit of squid on prefer the ones with the tassels on them.Used to use the mustad live bait hooks and pin a bait just behind the back of the had and out they went have used the above mentioned down at Busso in the past and caught Mulloway, sambo's and plenty of yellow tail kings.
good luck with your fishing endevors

If you want a proper battery
If you want a proper battery air pump, buy it from an aquarium store not a tackle store. Quality will be much better.

Was wondering when someone
Was wondering when someone was going to pick him up on that. In case you don't know Salmonwanter it's illegal to use more than 3 hooks on the end of your line (gangs count as one hook) so you may need to cut some bait chaser rigs down to be legal.
I havn't fished busso much but when I have the herring numbers off the beaches were insane so I reckon they would be your best bet for livies. All I was doing to catch them was a paternoster rig using a small ball sinker at the bottom & 2 droppers with #4 baitholder hooks & a piece of coral prawn on each hook. Cast it out as far as you can & wind it back in very slowly. 9 out of 10 times I would have a fish on within a few seconds of the baits hitting the water.

I catch live bait on busso
I catch live bait on busso jetty with a sz4 sabiki rig and bread pieces for berley. If things are slow I put tiny pieces of bread on the hooks too. I usually get them quicker during the day.

Head out deeper get ya yacks
Head out deeper get ya yacks put them in livewell and then head in close to catch the Mulloway. sz 6- 8 baitchaser hook slowly jig them up and down ( slowly ), no bait required on them durin the day but put a bit a squid on the hooks at night. Use sz 8/0 or 9/0 Tarpon hooks with a running sinker sz 3 or 4 on you Mulloway rig, hook the bait just behind the anal fin avoiding the spine this way it will stay alive for ages. When you chuck out your Mulloway line with the livey make sure you give the line some slack so the sinker doesn't pin the yack down so it can still swim and let off the fish in distress vibrations.

so what makes that legal?
I understand a single hook, not ganged, is one hook.

glad you cleared that up.
glad you cleared that up. Interesting use of the snell for baitchasing.
for those wondering, Snell = 1 set of hooks, so 4 hooks = 2 snells = 2 sets.
