Kalbarri Report 2012
So I left for Kalbarri on Sunday the 7th for a 6 day trip. We loaded the car up the night before so we could get away at 5.00 the next morning so we could get to Geraldton just in time for breakfast at Maccas :) We arrived in Kalbarri at 12.30 and as soon as we checked in to our cabin at Murchison Caravan Park we were off to find a spot to fish that night. This is how the 6 day trip went ..
SUNDAY - As we had just arrived, we decided to go for a fish in the river which looked much healthier then last year when I was there. unfortunately the river was very shallow and we had no luck. even though no fish were caught it was still a great night as the whales started jumping a few hundred metres off shore.
MONDAY - On monday we went out with Reefwalker Charters. The strong winds and 2m+ swell made for an uncomfortable ride out but soon the wind died down and we could start to fish. The first few hours went by with no fish caught except 2 coral trout. Unfortunately i wasn't the one to catch them. we moved spots many times until finally I had a tug on my line. After a little fight, a nice 54cm pink snapper came to the surface. After a few photos the fish was put on ice and I was ready to start fishing again. I dropped straight back down and again hooked up to a fish. this one felt a bit bigger and the head shakes made it obvious that I was on to a bigger pink snapper. after another little fight a 58cm pinkie came up. The 58cm pinkie is the biggest pinkie i have ever caught so I was pretty happy.
TUESDAY - We decided that we would go for a beach session at Red Bluff. After arriving at the beach we realised that with 50km/h+ winds and massive swell that it would be a bit difficult to fish there. After about 20 minutes we decided to head to Chinamens. We got there and there was virtually no wind. I put out a mullie hoping for a mulloway but no luck. once again, nothing was caught.
WEDNESDAY - On wednesday we did the Canoe Safari down the river and as we were going we were looking for fishing spots. after speaking to the guides we found some great spots that we would like to come try. So an afternoon session it was! We headed around 9km up river to a spot that looked promising. After a few casts, my dad, my cousin, my uncle and literally everyone fishing was catching bream. I wasn't catching anything and it stayed like that for the whole session. A few little mulloway were caught along with lots of black bream and tarwhine, nothing too big though.
THURSDAY - On thursday we went back to the same spot on the river for what was another great session with a few 35cm+ bream and some mulloway. A few bream were kept due to not releasing well. It was a very productive day even though the flies were in there millions! On thursday night we went to the boat jetty just for a little flick around to see what was there. We landed a few finger mark and a lot of small bream and tarwhine whilst a few young blokes pulled out a 45cm mulloway.
FRIDAY - Friday was the last day for us :( We hired a little tinny from the boat hire place and took it up river fishing snags on the way up. We stopped at some rocks near castle rock and first cast my cousin caught a nice fish that put a bend in his bream rod. Unfortunately we don't have a clue what it was so I will post a picture below. We then moved from these rocks to a nice bit of beach with heaps of snags and once again caught lots of little bream and tarwhine. After a 20 minute fish we got back on the boat and moved again. We moved further up river and found the perfect spot with a massive drop off and a big tree in the water. We knew we would find bigger bream there. First cast and I was snapped off by what looked like the biggest bream I've ever seen. I re-tied my rig and got straight back in the water and once again hooked up to a big bream, this time actually landing it. The bream wasn't that big but still a nice size. We continued to fish until finally heading back into Kalbarri to drop the boat off.
SATURDAY - Over all I had a great trip. The fishing wasn't as good as we anticipated but I got my first and largest pinkie and got onto some nice fish. Now I'm sitting in the car trying to pass some time by writing this. 6 hour car trips are not fun. I hope you had a good read. :)

Good report mate
Always plenty of options up there. Weather does play a part however. I'm suprised you didn't use the tinny to fish Black Rock. Some massive Tailor hang around there.
