How too and Can you catch Crays in Exmouth ?

I'm not a freediver or into crayfishing but one of the crew is ( coming from Sydney for the trip ) Heading to Exmouth in a couple of weeks and he wanted to know if we could drop a couple of pots for Crays . Told him I think there are only Painted Creys up that way and they don't go into pots ( not sure ). I have never seen any pots up there .

Am I correct in saying that ?, and the only way to get them is to dive and snare them ?

If you can snare them are they any good to eat ?

Cheers

Paul

your pretty much correct,

Exmouth is about as far norht as you would see any red crays, and they are very unusual to find.

Painted crays are in numbers, and snorkeling for them can be done. Snare is one way, or just grab them with gloves if your quick enough!

easy enough to glove them.

easy enough to glove them. find them in shallow water too. just be wary of where you are, lots of sanctuary zones up there. they are not as good to eat as southern and western crays but you still wouldn't say no. i think they taste great on the barbie with garlic butter or you can marinate them a bit. yumyums.

Leave the pots at home and save your room, shallow water bombies or ledges are best.  Can't tell you where the reds are coz it took me a few years to find them up there and thats being saved for when I go back.  The ornates and painteds are still pretty good on the tooth and so are the greens depending upon your tastes, bit of thai peri peri and coconut sauce makes them go along way.

Didnt want to buy pots and you wouldn't get me in the water up there , too many toothy critters for my liking . Will leave it to the East-coaster to try his luck . If the grey coats move in -- one less Sydneyite wouldn't be missed Lol .

While you are probably right about the Sydneyite the boys in the grey coats are pretty well fed and don't really give you much grief apart from stealing fish. Just find some shallow structure on the low tide and you will most likely see them waving at you.
