How to bleed a shark ?
Submitted by fish4dan on Tue, 2012-05-29 22:31
I caught a small 1 metre shark at the weekend, but realized I didn't know much about identification, eating quality, how to bleed it properly, or how to prevent the taste of ammonia in the flesh - so I returned it to the water. Could anyone give me some pointers for next time ? Thanks, Dan

I just take the sharks down
I just take the sharks down to a trunk strait away. Head guts and fins all off strait away seems to do the job.

My father always told me cut
My father always told me cut the sharks fins .behind the hard, tails ,Dorsil etc etc and let it kick around to rid it of the ammonia taste .... not sure if this is correct but sort of makes sense, killing it immediately may stop that ..not sure !!! .... then again Ikijime might be the best thing as in all the other fish.

I ikijimi them then cut at
I ikijimi them then cut at the base of the tail from the bottom towards the spine and drains all there blood in a few seconds ( there main artery runs down the spine), never had a bad tasting one yet and then they still look good for photos.
always looking for a new challenge!!

Best way is to cut the tail
Best way is to cut the tail off it will bleed out like a hose. Then gut the shark and clean out the blood line along the spine this gets rid of the amonia. Right Carnarvonite?? ;)

Seakem
Seakem has it spot on, dong it on the head, and cut the tail off [if you are in someone else's boat and don't have to clean it, let it jump about spraying everything like a water pistol]. Once its stopped kicking off with the head and out with the innards especially the brown strip along the spine.
Cutting the fins off doesn't do a thing to removing the ammonia taste, it comes from the brown strip behind the guts along the spine. Don't forget to rinse out the passage from the back of the gut cavity to the inside of the spine at where the tail was cut off, the blood in there if left will send the meat off in no time.

Before you decide to kill
Before you decide to kill the thing maybe identify the shark first.

i usually get a rope and rap
i usually get a rope and rap it around the tail and tie off to the side of the boat, cut its tail and let it bleed out before gutting it. first time i done this we end up hooking a 6ft mako that came up the blood trail, had a ball!!!
