FishRanger Closing Down
Submitted by selthy on Fri, 2018-03-09 18:44
I just checked Fishranger to look at the forecast for the weekend.
A pop up message appeared to say it is closing down in the next few weeks as it was "not able to get a business on board". They are setting up a Go Fund Me page as a last resort.
Sad news as I have been finding that the info is the most accurate of the wind sites that present the forecast in a user friendly fashion... as it reads from BOM.
It will be interesting to know how much they need to raise to keep the site active.

If it reads from BOM...
...why not just use BOM? I know they were a site sponsor, and sad to see them go, but I find BOM quite user friendly.

I quite like BoM's Meteye
I quite like BoM's Meteye site and always look at that too but liked the way fishranger gives a simple 7 day view by the hour.
Plus Meteye gives a 3 hourly forecast where Fishranger provides an hourly forecast.

Confirmation.
I got this reply from Joe yesterday re the rumour of the sites closure. A shame a corporate sponsor for such a good site cant be found. So much better and easier to use than the others available IMO. Bugger!
Hi There,
Yes you heard correct, the site is unmonetized and I (Joe the founder) can not keep funding it indefinitely without return. It costs $21,000 per year just to operate the site without me getting a cent – that’s mostly BOM data cost and server hosting cost and a little bit for essential maintenance. I’m going to set up a Kickstarter to try and get users on board to pledge money to keep the site running. If you can pledge some money towards that it would be greatly appreciated. Stay tuned for details of the page when its ready.
Kind regards,
Joe

How much does he need to keep
How much does he need to keep going as I'll be chucking in a donation? I'm sure if everyone realised how accurate and user friendly the website and app was it'd be the only one they use.

I'd happily pay for a quality forecast site such as fishrabger. I already pay a yearly fee for Sea surface conditions anyways

Thank You
Hi All,
Its Joe here from Fish Ranger. I saw a lot of traffic coming from this forum so come to take a look.
Your support with the kickstarter campaign is greatly appreciated. It really is a last resort to keep the site going - if successfull it will raise enough funds to keep the site running and to build a subscriptions portal so we can offer subscriptions moving forward - since at the moment we can't. I'm also hoping the extra attention the campaign and plight brings will attract sponsors or equity investors.
Most people pay for SST apps, I know we can do SST better than most and have it in plan for the future. We've already imported images from the CSIRO satellite to do it so if we continue we will roll that out at some point.
Regards,
Joe

OK people, time to put your money down.
I know that in this age of the internet, some of us seem to feel that all content should be free...somehow...personally, if I reckon a service is really worth having, I'm willing to pay. Go to that Kickstarter page, you'll actually get free membership for your pledge if they get it going as a subscription site. if you reckon free BOM, Willyweather, whatever, is good enough, just do nothing. I've just sub'd and I was only the 19th to do it.
If you really like it, get behind it with more than just nice words on the keyboard.

I'll probably put in but for mine, he could have been a bit more generous for backers. He is competing against a lot of data services that are free. I know they aren't the same but they are free.
Once he has his initial user base, the growth will come...
