Drug aware Margaret river surfing pro
Hows it going lads/ladies. :)
Delighted to be back in WA after an extended holiday away.
Just a quick few question's, relating to the Title of the post. A group of mates and I are heading down to the event for the end of the event, 22nd March - 24th.
There is about 2 of us out of a group of 15 people, that would be into the fishing lifestyle and was wondering is there anywhere near by that's close to the town of Margaret river itself that is landbased, that is available for some target fishing for the likes of Tailor, Herring, or anything decent.
I wont have much time to go hunting around for spots and time is precious as the Mrs and the gang won't be hanging around. Any help or info on the general area or stretch of beach or rock wall's (preferably) would be great. If you don't wish to disclose info over this publically, please send a PM..
All info greatly appreciated.
PS: Rods we have are: 10ft multi purpose Uglystick, 13 foot surf rod. (not much room in the car for more gear due to the ladies and their baggage.)
Cheers in advance.

South Beach - Down from Contos
Hey mate, a good option for what ya've mentioned would be South Beach. Just keep heading south down Caves Road til you get to Conto Springs Rd (Lake Cave). Head in there, turn left at the first left turning point and head straight down the road, changes from pea gravel to limestone track. Keep going all the way, til you get to the end and bottom of the hill. Great spot to flick a few lures for Tailor/Hezzas/possible Salmon.
Really awesome spot with rocks, gutters and champagne water.
All the best!

Wazza
Cheers Wazza,
Sounds the job, Il defo give it a try. Would you think, chucking out a float with a mullie under do any good in the spot you mentioned.? I have got a few twistys, and a few poppers and ritcher plugs if i get stuck..
I didnt realise salmon were on the run this time of the year.. Im defo interested in getting into a few of them if i can.. Would they be plentiful down that Direction.? Any suggestions on lures or bait to get a shot at them?
Sorry for all the questions mate, just want to try make the most of the trip down. And what precious time il have while there. :)
Thanks again for the response.

Stick to the lures.
No worries. Yeah, you won't have any problems catching fish with lures down there. Twistys, richter plugs and small poppers will do the trick. Saves having to worry about bait too. The only thing that'll slow ya down a bit is if the swell is up. Pretty exposed bit of coast.

Sounds like a plan, plus the lures, saves the smell of rotten bait in the car with the misses complainin the whole way home.. :)
Il defo give it a shot so.
if the coast is as rough like ireland's ragged coast I should be fine.. Il just keep my common sense close by and not get too exicted about the view or the prospects of a good screaming reel.. :)

No salmon yet
Doubt they will be here in the next week or so either, maybe a late run towards the end of April like last year (here's to hoping).
I fish down there alot, alays come home with a feed and i virtually never use any bait, just an assortment of lures.

Thanks J_doggy,
Would you be up for a fish over that weekend if your free. Wouldn't mind getting to know the ropes off someone who fishes the area frequently.
Im keen angler, dont need to be baby-sat, just abit of company and some sport of catching a few fish for both a feed and catch and release.
On google maps, I see the conto's road, takes me to a Campsite and then at the coast side of the campsite, there is a T junction, South towards Point road, and the north or right hand turn at the T junction brings you back in a loop around the outside of the campsite.
Is that the right area Im lookin at? Would you suggest heading left and apprx how far down would you think to drive down and throw a few lures around?

I tend to fish the north beach more..
rather than south beach - i have alot more luck fishing conto springs beach walking up towards bobs hollow, just depends on the day though really. South beach you drive to the end carpark, walk south enough and you end up at Boranup. If i'm fishing south of conto's I usually go to hamelin/Boranup, but usually i make a decision the night before depending on weather.
It's also worth a look at Merchants/Slopeys/point carparks which are all well sign posted when you go down there - they are off the rocks and be very careful of the swell - people die there every year. Off the rocks if you get a good day a nice easterly a balloon can yield sambo's/YTK/sharks.
Haven't had much success on the tailor over the last few weeks with them maybe going off the bite, but herring are eveywhere and are fat.
Might be up for a fish - I'm pretty busy at work though but Mrs is away with my son this weekend...
BTW was at a beach south of Margs (MattMiller knows the one
) where a 6' bronzie was just cruizing around on Sunday morning for half hour 20-40m off the beach with tail and dorsal fin out in shallow water, spewing i only had my herring gear and not something heavier...

6' bronzie
Sounds like a bit of back breaking, & gear testing fun right there.. Would of been a funny sight trying to get him on the herring gear for sure. :)
Thanks a million for the advise on the spots and suggestions. That will come in real handy. Just need to peek away from the better half for a few hours now when Im down there and make the most of my time.
I know what you mean about the rocks and fishing, not the best place to go on your own im sure. hence the local advice info always pays off big time.
If you are free on that weekend, il be around on the friday evening or saturday for a few hours, just so I can wet a line and see how i get on. Hopefully bring home a fat herring for the barbie.
yea the tailor have went off the bite a gud bit over the last few weeks, I only managed 2 monday night in my local haunt north of river in perth where they would normally be in bigger numbers, specially with the conditions that was there. Swell was up, water was perfect, and bait fish everywhere. Do the tailor normally go off the bite like that, this time of year?
What gear/lures would you suggest or recommend on the herring other species sides of fishing down that way?

The tailor are definitely not
The tailor are definitely not off the bite offshore. I caught over 50 tailor in two sessions just last week using just one lure, ranging from 38cm to 55cms..

Lucky for you
Well for some, I bet that was good sport. Are you still out on the Yak?? I have read a few of your reports. Good stuff. :)
I on the other hand am not that fortunate to have access to off shore fishing.
Im stuck landbased :(
id give my right arm to have a proper chance at a decent session off shore.
Iv spend nearly a $1000 on dodgy charters from the metro area. And it breaks my heart.
With the land based sides of it, from my last few times out, (which is not as many as I would like, due to work commitments) has been hit and miss.
In saying that i am only using bait, and not using lures, I mostly go North of the river, but would be keen to try a few places south of the river, but as Im unfamiliar with the area, i dont want to waste my precious time travelling to places to only get blanked (which is part of fishing) or spend half my day driving around lost.. haha :)
If you know anywhere south of metro, landbased, where you could suggest that might get a good chance of a run, please shout me, Il be very grateful.
cheers.

Sheesh I'll take you out on the boat for some tailor mate, they're about the only species I can pretty much guarantee anyone if they come out. I like to go out on Thursdays and Friday's does that suit you? I owe leemo a trip out to would be good to get you both out on the same day.
Most of my reports are either from the jetski or boat these days never fished much from the kayak.

Pm sent
Yea mate, ive spent a small fortune on trips around the metro area.
Went out on 3 boats with very little success. Waste of time and money. But sure, I live and I learn.
I sent a Pm there mate, all should be good to go with me any day that suits. Be great to meet up with a few fellow FW members.
Yea sorry, i meant the Ski, not the Yak.. That was my mistake. Have you been out lately on the jetski.??

Sounds good mate. The spot
Sounds good mate.
The spot where I caught all the tailor was on the ski, you can't fit a boat through the reef to get to the spot.
I'll check my inbox now. .
