Buying Boats Interstate
Submitted by Francis on Thu, 2012-10-11 12:47
G'day guys,
Just wondering if any of you guys have purchased a boat from interstate and how you went about it / what were your experiences ?
I will soon be in the market for a striper or a trophy (at this stage... still doing my research) but I notice that there is a lot more boat choice and better prices in the eastern states.
I imagine the whole process of viewing / testing / purchasing / getting it back to WA (either driving it or some other way) would be an adventure to say the least. Would have to allow at least $5000 on top of the price to cover trips, accomodation and transport back.
Keen to hear any one's similar experiences.

hey mate..
i did this exact process.
I bought my 26 striper from woollongong back in march.
I flew over for 2 nights. i hired a car from sydney airport, and in that time just stayed at a local hotel. i organised with the seller to do a sea trial while i was there.. i would reccomend staying for 2 nights as when i went it was blowing a gale so couldnt even launch the boat..
Transport from there to perth cost me $5k... that is the chapest i found and i rang ALOT of companies. The boat was put on the back of a truck so it wasnt towed on its trailer..
the other thing to consider if it is aboat of my size, rental cars do not have electrica brakes fitted, and some do not have the towing capacity
Send me a pm if you want the transport company number.
cheers

Yep, agree with jc85. I
Yep, agree with jc85.
I bought a 28 footer in QLD a few years back and saved about 20k doing so.
it cost me $6500 to get it back to WA so similar to jc's price considering the extra distance.
apart from the price, undertook the exact same process: flew over on ff points, hired a car, stayed in a backpackers on the Gold Coast for a couple of nights, sea trialled and then placed an offer (subject to mech inspection).
like for any boat, I recommend a marine hull and engine survey to give you a better idea of exactly what you are buying. No point arranging the survey though until you are happy with the sea trial.
then by memory, you will probably have to de-register the boat and re-register in WA. To do so, you may need to have it verified again by a registered dept of planning and infrastructure marine person (can't remember their exact title but its on their website) but that's not a big deal at all, couple of hundred bucks maximum.
good luck

I got my galeforce built and I drove over to the brissy and towed it back. Cost me a quater of the price I was quoted to truck it across.
But if you can afford to buy a massive boat then surely you can afford freight to get it back.

Cheers for the useful info...
Yeah I would be more inclined to get it freighted back rather than drive it. Driving it brings up a heap more complications for me, as it adds time (driving there and back) and it is a loooong way to drive a used trailor that carries a big boat. Would be worried about things going wrong half way across the nullabor! haha
Not looking for a huge boat, just a 19-21 footer. Just seems that even for this size boat the range and costs over east are much better...
Never even thought about having to de-register and re-register it. That is a good point... with any luck there would be a few different boats that i could check out at the same time. Will be an interesting journey for sure.
Cheers!

I bought my cruisecraft in qld a few years back and towed it back. Im about to do it again from nsw with the evolution. Makes it easier that i time it to buy a vehicle at the same time.

Regarding the
Regarding the deregistration- don't forget to factor this into your negotiation. Ie, when you deregistration, whatever rego remains, is refunded to the owner who has it registered in the particular state- not you.
so in other words, they can get another few hundred dollars refunded to them once you deregister it - depending on how long is left on the rego

Evolution
I dont want to hijack the thread, but Olliej, I'd be interested to know what the comparison is like between the cruise craft and evolution in terms of ride/stability/comfort etc.
They both look like darn nice boats, and I am toying with the idea of an upgrade to a 680. Not sure what size you have.
Was also considering a trip over east to buy as I would be looking for a second hand one (2-3 years old).

Im looking second hand too.
Im looking second hand too. im keen on the 550 so its not really going to be an apples with apples comparison to my 93 4.7m cruisecraft.
Pale ale , i read that and would go completely off the deep emd if it happened to me - but dig enough and every company has some sort of horror story. Hell toyotas issues killed people and im sure we keep buying them too?
