Why in hell do some boat owners rely on winch cables alone
I won’t even move mine from storage to the ramp, all of 150 metres, without the safety chain attached ......suppose that comes from being a retired claims manager.....seen it all in 44 years. If it can go wrong at some time it surely will

Chain doesnt help if the winch post fails.
More people should be strapping their boats to the trailer.

After reading your comment Tim I went out the shed and checked me trailer 1 nut out of 4 missing from the winch and I got half a turn on the nuts where the post bolts to the draw bar

Good that you caught it now.
Have seen posts snapped at the base after emergency stops so the chain and winch do nothing in that case
Best idea is a chain and turnbuckle from the eye to stop it moving forward and straps on the transom to stop it slif=ding back.
Once it starts moving the momentum of 2t on a trailer will take over for nasty results

Maybe a couple of people to hold the boat level while someone winches and maybe someone in the car slowly reversing? That boat maybe a little to big for that method

Recover boat
Seek help from a couple of people to hold boat level.
Use jack to jack up front of boat as high as possible so that bow is high enough to get first roller underneath bow
Reverse trailer under boat bow then winch up, by bow being up on first roller not as much weight on winch and rope recovery quicker.

Then, for trips further than the K down to my local ramp, a turnbuckle chained to a point on the trailer not belonging to the winchpost. And tie downs on the transom--I paid to have them fitted on the new boat. They also help in a collision because they help with the boat not moving forward. Having 2 tonne of hull on a trailer in a collision puts enormous forces on the winch post--I've seen a boat go through the rear canopy window of a dual cab in a low head-on speed collision, someone turning into the bottom car park of the Exmouth shopping centre.

Unhitch trailer but leave safety chains connected so trailer tilts.
Hook up winch, car off brakes off and winch boat up pulling trailer under it as you go.

...and there you have the one great advantage of plate boats
dump em' on the ramp, ground em' on the reef, and you have no real damage apart from 1 million plus people laughing at you on the internet, forever, and some scratches ( if the leg doesn't hit). So, with the judicious application of some common sense and basic safe operating principles, plus just a little luck, they have no advantage at all.

one of the key reasons i went
one of the key reasons i went with a plate alli years ago , was purely that advantage of being able to put the hull into more ''risky ''launch sites ..
many out of marina ramps or beach launches put you in close proximity to rocks etc , the alli is much more hardy ime
having grounded my hull on the canal ramp over adecade ago it did no damage to it , winch strap , prop, and minor leg damage to motor back then , but overall minor compraed to a glass hull
we also have a turn buckle & chain welded onto trailer just behind the stem post , in case one or other fails

Has anyone ever heard of the towing eye on the bow giving way ?
The winch cable and saftey chain / turn buckle would be irrelevent if the towing eye gave way

I had one snap on my previous boat. Lucky it while retrieving rather than towing.
Another good reason to strap the boat to the trailer when towing

When i bought my Dominator, I cleaned out the anchor well , chucking out the old rope. Whats this bolt in the bottom??? One half of the bow eye, thats what. By the way it had corroded down, crevice corrosion had been at work. When i knocked the old one out, the half still in there was fine. Scared me enough to fit a second bow eye, easy enough on that boat. One for the winch cable, one for security. My current setup has a massive 16mm L&R boatlatch, don't thing I'll be snapping those studs in a hurry.
A bloke up here nearly dropped one leaving the ramp a couple of years ago, here felt the trailer go weird, looked back and the boats on the way off. Luckily stopped before it went past the point of no return. Must had had skids and bunks, he had snapped the bow eye off.

I had half of the u bolt on my bow fracture where it goes into the hull. Only saw it when I was doing work in the backyard.
