2 Size 3 circle hooks. 1 size 2 regular hook on the bottom for KG. squid for bait. A locally caught fish or mulie on the surface out the back, smelled size 3 circle hook.
Find a section of the 'reef' that looks decent, then anchor and start burleying. You will pick up Skippy, Whiting, and sometimes Sambos and Pinkies too. I have even picked up the odd Dhui and Queen Snapper doing this too albiet small.
If you are just catching millions of Wrasse move to another location. Ideal place you should only get a few Wrasse and Skippy should turn up within 15-30mins of burleying. If nothing turns up move to another spot. Main depth is 17.5-18.5m depending on tide. Most the 4-mile is actually flat broken limestone with there being some coral about, but most depth changes are less than 1.5m so keep a close eye on your sounder
And as Matt says there is always a chance of pelagics having a troll around too. So while your around looking for a spot have some lures out the back, never know what might jump on!
The 8 and 12 mile 'reefs arent exactly the same layout as the 4 mile. The 4 mile reef run like a line of reef parralleling the shore, in some areas 3.5nm out in other areas 4.5nm out. But on average 4nm out. It basically ends as a distinct line of reef though to the East of the Artificial Reef off Quindalup.
The 8 and 12 mile are more just random numbers as once you get beyond the 4 mile there are just patches of broken flat reef scattered all throughout Geographe Bay ranging from 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, etc nm out. Most of these scattered reefs/rubbleybottom are like the 4mile in that they dont generally exceed in depth changes of more than 1-1.5m but there are some that will be bigger. Best way to find these Reefs is to seriously just go and drive around have a good sounder and see what you can find. Good place to start is have a looksee aorund the 30m contour line.
Be prepared to spend alot of time watching a blank seemingly sandy bottom though. Its where having a good sounder will help you determine if its sand or hard rocky bottom, as some of the 'reefs' are completely flat hard bottom, no depth change at all.
Generally i find that these scattered flat reefs dont fish that well anymore. They did back in the mid to late 90's, but most(not all) seem dead nowadays. Still in September you can sometimes find the Pinkies Schooling up on some of them, makes for fishing similar to the Pinkies Schools in Cockburn Sound. Most my fishing in the Bay now i just hang around the 4 Mile as it always produces Skippy and Sambos for me, with the odd Pinkie every now and then.
