What lantern, camp light?

I was wondering what everyone uses as their main source of light when camping (and fishing). Im keen on a dual fuel type but am concerned with the fire risk, can these set fire to tents or bush if they are knocked over?

rechargable fluoro light, about $30 and no batteries. Last for a fair while, pump out the light and charger off 12v or 240v.

i have a light like this, i compair the light output to HID and is alot better than LED, 10+hrs on 3 AAAs  on high, has focas too. duel fuels are good for extented stays but because they use mantles they tend to be fragile, i use my headlamp and two fluro lights running off a battery. more than ample light i find. i also have a small gennie(600w) for exstended stays, does lights and stero, size of a carton of beer and cost $200, cant go wrong i find!

Have heard the cree's are awesome

Have got a couple of simpler Petzl headlamps myself, and a lithium/D cell multi coleman, but the coleman only good on D cell operation.

Prefer the old Primus gas lantern myself, at least in winter when it gives the tent a bit of heat too.

Definately going fluoro next electric lamp, much better.

duel fuels a good but have problems, apart from bringing the fuel and wot not u gotta wait ten mins b4 packing them away cause they get hot....mantle breaks when travelling and a bit labour intensive....as a set and forget camp light they are fanatastic, but when yr moving round a pita

coleman camp lights, the red one which is 1 watt i beleive a good...i have one and produce a  good spread of light when well placed

headlamp i use a 4aa cell lamp called a fenix hp 10...........why did i buy this one..........takes 4 aa's so longer battery life as i use rechargebles and its simple cause its and even nomber of batts, 4 light modes, fully waterproof for rock hoping and can be dunked under water up to 5mtrs i think.........cons, maybe a tad heavier cause of the extra battery, doesnt have a deidcated difuser  mechanism but can be brought seperatly for under $10...........overall highly recomended

I ended up purchasing a coleman pinnacle for 80 bucks brand new, propane lantern, the little cyls can be refilled from my bbq cyl and its the brightest lantern coleman makes, works mint, no mess no fuss, electronic igniter, clip on mantles. The light output is perfect for a campsite and on the lowest setting is still brighter than my fluro lantern and the warmer colour temp spreads further than the whiter light of a fluro or led. I also purchaced one of those cree head lamps for 11 bucks, pisses over my 56 led head lamp, also got a torch for work for 3 bucks, these leds are the shit, the T6 cree LED is the brightest with some torches with 3 of these fitted claim to have up to 3800 lumens.

I use a gas lantern to a 3kg

Sun, 2011-09-04 21:18

I use a gas lantern to a 3kg bottle that fits in my bucket. also with a 1m extension bar that has another tap on it, so can also run a small gas cooker at the same time. as its a lil higher up, has a very very nice radius of light. since i bought it, never like to fish without it... one of the best investments i've made for the purpose of fishin.

Also use a 400lumen cree led zoomable headlamp and a 1600lumen cree led zoomable flashlight on my belt as well as a 3600lumen cree led flood beam flashlight in my tackle bag. carry 2x spare 800lumen cree led in the car as well. all runs on 14500 3.7v and 18650 3.7v rechargables....

I like torches.

It just appear that you like light. Sounds like me and quality knives. Be it for home, fishing etc, just got to have a nice knife.

As for lights, I would now never take a lantern that causes heat, ie butane, propane, LPG etc etc. I hate the mantles when they vaporize, but thats not an issue if you have spares. Its just that its safe. I myself had a old Coleman kero (I think from memory) lantern that was piss easy to use (pump up version) but man do they go hot. I think my sons was about 4-5 on his first fishing expedition with myself and Roy Tuckey (Mandurah original Tuckey's Tackle Owner's son that ran it until Chris (I think Barber) took over -- by the way great bloke and fantastic at advise when needed in the Mandurah area). Well it didnt end well for Roy and myself in the old "Whiting Cove" (now part of the Marina) we called it. We didnt even have the lines in for the then almost certain fat Yellowfin Whiting bonanza when a shriek filled the air. Luckily it wasnt on fully yet and Jos only got superficial burns on his hand. We werent in the good books with every possible motherly insult flying towards us by the 2 irrate wives.

Sinc ethen until good battery operated and recharable lanterns and LED came out I was always very nervous about them burning someone. I have had numerous light burns and one almost bush fire started in the mad old Marroning days.

I now only use Battery lanterns and have had no problems with Coleman, either in fluoro or LED. Flouro full charge nightime use about 2 nights. LED havent been tested fully yet because if a trip is going to last longer I take either a power pack or Honda generator 2000W. Just love to play with this beauty anyway, and it then light up a campsite with whatever you want. I probably should have saved money and get a cheapy but couldnt resist the Honda. I then recharge the lanterns from the genie and alls good.

I have 4 Colemans, 2 LED, 2 Flouro, and prior to lighting the boat they were our light source night fishing. The LED's piss on them but they did the job and certainly was safe.

I am blown away by the lattest technology in LED headlight. Havent needed it up here in the Pilbara so the old ones are dying. But I will get new ones for sure for prawning, fishing, Marroning etc when and if I ever move south. They are just awesome and I think the ones I love are the Cree H14R. Not as cheap as some, but turns night into day where you look.

cheers

Neels

Not all cree are expensive.

Mon, 2011-09-05 15:24

Not all cree are expensive. But anyways, for ambient light that's bright and easy on the eyes go gas lanterns, but yea, the mantles are a little fragile once its been used once. Always have to have spares.

LEDs arent that good for clarity, yeah they can get BRIGHT as hell but, visually not as good as a yellow/day type light. Only there arent too many super bright day light lanterns aside from LEDS with a yellow lens or your standard globed lanterns. For use in fishing its just the same, no matter how bright my cree LEDs are, I can still see with alot more clarity through the water with my standard dolphin torch. Though LED and Xenon globes and emitters have far better light distance output. Conventional white light will travel further then yellow as a beam, not really as a radius. Take cree for example, the emitter itself is flat like a microchip and does not have a radius, and are better as a beam source rather than a lantern type. Look at all the new traffic lights nowadays, all LED and see how far you can see those.

Cree LED emitters have life from 10,000 to 100,000 hrs of use so its not bad for money.

I guess it all depends on exactly what you will use it for. For power economy, go any LED. The best thing about them is the longevity of battery life, especially if you just want it for ambience lighting.

All in all LED = economy, longevity and distance (depending on LED type)

Other conventional lights = Clarity, water penetration

Oh and another thing, im pretty sure you can get light/lantern attachments that go on a cordless drill battery. Being 12/18v that would be a good output. Might have to do some google about that one.

I always used a dewalt 18v fluro till it went walk about! But lasted for ages and always had charged batteries because of work tools!

a LED lantern is next for me!
