trolling and ballooning reel?

hi fellas,
im after a trolling and ballooning overhead reel, im new to the whole trolling and ballooning scene so im undecided and unsure of what reel would be best. im not after a huge reel, something small that can hold a good amount of line. im planning on spooling it up with 30lb fireline. so far ive been looking at the tiagra 12, but unsure on line capacity.. anyone have one that can let me know how much line it can take? how does it compare to lets say a torsa 20?
its just going to be used for trolling for pelagics, and ballooning for mackies up north, if tiagra 12 is slightly to small, might look at the 16.. although id prefer if there was something else a bit smaller and lighter. any suggestions will be great!

tiagra 12
ive got a tiagra 12 and at a guess i'd say 425/475m of 30lb fireline would fit on it , they are an awesome reel , very smooth drag and going by what mines been through id say they are bulletproof!! cheers

too light
30lb braid is going to be too light for balloning up north mate, more like 50-80lb braid with a top shot of 80lb mono. For reels people use 30w internationals, 30 Tiagra's, senators. Big TLD's to get the line capacity. Obviously this is going to be a heavy reel but it will mostly be sitting in a rod holder anyway.
for ballooning up north you want be looking at minimum 400m of line and even then most would have more

When you refer to ballooning
you are referring to ballooning from the shore, aren't you?

TLD25
I have a Shimano TLD25 loaded with 400mtr 50lb Tufline. Use it for trolling and ballooning with about 50mts shock leader. Have had it for 15 years and has not missed a beat. caught some big mackies at Coral Bay so i nknow it does the trick. Also lightweight compared to other reels of the same size. Reasonably priced as well

2 speed is the go as youll
2 speed is the go as youll find out winding in 400mtrs plus of line with a garfish split in two and no hookups

Two Speed
With the fishing you are planning to do I'm not convinced you need a two speed reel. A single speed reel with a reasonable retrieve ratio should manage OK imo. I don't believe a two speed reel has many advantages in trolling for pelagics and whilst I have never ballooned off the cliffs I cannot see much advantage of engaging a lower ratio in that situation.

Don''t
mess around, I've got a 30tw inter and a 50tw. I tend to always pull out the 50tw that is loaded with 80lb braid and 100lb leader. Sounds like overkill but you need to crank them in as fast as possible because sharks zero in on spanish mackeral pretty quickly, especially at Quobba. There is no need for a two speed either as you will want the quickest possible retrieve at all times. The 50tw weighs a liitle more but its bigger spool means you normally have a faster retrieve than the 30 class size reel even when you have your bait set out wide.I'd go the Penn International above all others but that is purely personal.

Tyrnos 30 2 speed
I will give another vote for the Trynos.. I went to Quobba in June and my mate had a new Tyrnos 30 2 speed with 600m 50lb braid and that reel dominated! The TLD are also a good reel for the money but has a slower retrieve ratio I think...
