Fish tonnage

I'm still trying to work out how they can work out how many demersal fish are taken by rec fishers. Not everyone that goes out catches them not all fishers target them. So do they just throw a dart at the board and say that's how much was caught this year by rec fishers. They say the science is right but how does the science work it out when they cannot hand on heart ount every fish pulled over the gunnel.

6 demersals on my boat over
6 demersals on my boat over the past 12 months.
Not my doing either...but when the researchers from UWA/Fisheries ask me how often we go fishing, I need to tell them that we wet a line each time we go out, but that may just be my young bloke casting a twisty to cast and release herring.

I try and get out every couple of weeks, weather permitting, but only inshore. Sometimes chased pinkies as part of a mixed bag, other times just tailor, herring and skippy. Occasionally mukh around with pots for crays throughout the year and live in hope of a metro mackie. Have been checked at sea 3 times in 20 years when after tailor, to make sure I had rec licence, and once at the ramp had the crays measured. Never been asked about demersals, but maybe that will change. See no problem reporting catch online if that comes in.

I've also wondered how they arrive on some of the figures.
Seen another abc segment last week saying in 2025 the recs took 90 tonnes of Dhu fish while the commercial sector only took 43 tonnes. im in the south but still rarely get checked by inspectors let alone measure and weigh any catch.
I have wondered about the post full of cameras at my local ramp installed about 18 months ago only meters from the actual launch area.This ramp only ramp only holds about 20 cars & trailers and only got sealed a couple of years ago.Do they check footage and decide that a boat offshore capable with three bloke leaving in it and automatically assume they bring back a full bag each and that's were some estimates come from ??
