Tow Vehicle Fuel Consumption

Given that this is about a motor vehicle and not Fishing or Boats this is possibly the wrong Forum for this topic but then everyone that has a boat tows it with something.

I am trying to get to the bottom of what kind of fuel consumption I should expect to get from a petrol 4.7L V8 Landcruiser whilst towing a 3T boat. I currently try to tow at an average of 90KPH so usually I am sitting on 85 - 95KPH. At this speed towing say to Exmouth and back I am averaging 25 litres/100 - It seems to me that this is excessive and I am looking for feedback as to what would be deemed acceptable. Understand that there are lots of factors, wind, traffic etc but I am talking generally not one specific instance where I may have been affected by a headwind for example.

If this is considered "normal" consumption are there any suggestions of how this performance may be improved ie a custom exhaust, re-chipping or other. I can upgrade to a diesel but want to explore all opportunities before committing to the significant expense of a change over.

Appreciate any feedback.

Cheers

It's all subjective

I have the 4.7 petrol and that fuel usage with that load is about right , I've got a mate with a 200 series Turbo diesel and against the normal afternoon wind from Port Hedland to Karratha he used over 30ltr per 100ks , another with a 4.2 turbo auto towing a big  Jayco camper varies from 15 to 25ltrs , it's all about the right boot , and the age old argument from petrol cruiser owners which I tend to subscribe too , you can buy an awful lot of fuel for the difference in purchase price between for example a 2007 turbo diesel cruiser and the same model petrol .

While doing a lap of Oz we ranged from best of 15  to worst of 24.5 ltrs towing a Cub Supamatic Camper with all the fruit .

Sounds about right to me. Chipping and exhaust mods may help, but not a great deal.

With a 3T payload you're essentially driving two landcruisers mate - looking at it like that, 12.5L/100km doesnt sound too bad  :)

v8 cruiser

I have one of these too, bought it up around 170000km on the odo ( 2005 model).

2 comments:

Firstly - I have it serviced more frequently than prescribed ( as I do tow a 2 ton rig, often trailer loaded with hay too) by an independant mechanic who has proven himself trustworthy. PRessures checked, injectors checked and all in good nick.

Second - it has an LPG conversion so I run it on petrol and LPG aleternately.  The LPG is significantly cheaper to run on than petrol and importantly no noticeable drop in power. However, that is with 2 tons; 3 may be a different story?

Gas cinsumption with towing is approx 4km per litre - at roughly 60% the price of petrol to buy that translates into around 7km per litre of petrol when towing = 12 litres per 100km ( cost wise).

Cheers

That sounds about right. I recently put extractors and a 3" system on my cruiser. Apart from it sounding better it improved the fuel economy when towing my boat to around 23l/100.

Thu, 2012-12-20 13:17

200 series landcruiser t/diesel 2007 (a glorious production year)- around 18l-ish per hundred k's towing 3 ton, however add a litre of oil for every 250k's (yes yes the vacuum pump has been addressed)
Yesterday i cruised (excuse the pun) pass the bowser -diesel 1.52 per litre and unleaded 124.9 (with a voucher admittedly!)

Do i sound jaded??? :-)

My trips to Exy

Thu, 2012-12-20 13:27

in the V8 cruiser fully loaded and with the boat loaded (but no fuel) would be very close to 3.5t and I seem to average 33l per 100km.  I generally sit between 90-100kph.  Thirsty yes but it's not as if you do this trip every week.

Really if you only tow up

Thu, 2012-12-20 20:03

Really if you only tow up there once or twice a year, no mods are going to be cost effective.

85-90 kph

Your one of those annoying buggers that I have to try and overtake

V8 turbo diesel cruiser towing 3.5 tonne at min 100kph uses 20-24 liters per hundred depending on headwind and how many grey nomads I have put the boot in to overtake.
