for round 200bucks and under... Nope nothing else half decent. Wouldnt use a 15 on a surf rod anyways, too small. Get a saltist 50. Or a fin nor or anything else that has the spools sitting on bearings for casting. Come for a visit to the store and have a play with some.

Abu 7000

An Abu 7000 would fit the bill nicely, not lever drag but designed as a casting reel with line leveller and centrifugal braking system to help prevent over runs.

If you ever see one for sale buy it,an Abu 10.000,auto 2 two speed, centrifugal brake, line leveller and a fair size capacity spool.Magic reel to cast with and enough grunt to pull big fish out of hard spots.

overhead surf reels

Sat, 2010-04-03 15:33

Im also looking around for a decent casting overhead reel. I was thinking a torium 30 which a mate of mine uses, but after a bit of reading it seems the saltist is a bit more durable?

Can anyone advise me about saltist vs torium or is that a never ending debate? Really interested in how good they are for casting.

Saltist is about 50 bucks more than torium in similar size is that right?

Sorry for hijacking your post danno but similar topic.....

Cheers

TLD15 is not a casting reel.

TLD15 is not a casting reel.

Pretty much star > lever drag when it comes to casting overheads, unless you spend big bucks.

The issue with using lever

Sat, 2010-04-03 17:34

The issue with using lever drags on surf rods is with most of them, spool weight and drag disk size impedes distance etc..

The new saltist lever drag is quite castable fr surf rods how ever which gives a much more accurate viewable drag setting when adjusting during battle..

Many of the star drags arevery castable but some better than others..

Of course, you do want soemthing to suit the particular rod you are using..

Kind of, but not really.

A Saltist star drag has adjustable centrifugal cast control AND spool tension adjustment. These each help at different ends of the cast.

A Saltist lever drag has ... nothing but your thumb.

Shimano claim the Talica is castable, I haven't seen whats in the box though.

Avet offer mag based cast-control.

Accurate offer accucast which is some sort of minute drag engagement to control spool tension.

what line class are you

what line class are you fishing? TLD is a great reel for the price, but not very good for casting at all. Personally I would just get a spinning reel, unless you want to pay $300 bucks or so so for something like a torium, abu700 etc.

if you are gonna be running 30lb mono, you can get around 400m or so on a pen 850ssm, which is enough for most situations imo.

Save the cash and buy a Saltiga Surf 30 or a Shimano Trinidad DC. Well worth the extra coin.

gotta save the extra cash

gotta save the extra cash for a rod to pair with the torium.

any advice on a 14 foot two piece to go with it? would like to have both both heavy and light top pieces if that doesnt put the price up too much.
