Submitted by calstar on Sun, 2013-06-16 19:47
Hey guys. Was curious to know if anybody has added carbontex washers to a Spheros 14000 before?Im fishing 37kg powerpro through it on a Samurai pop 10 rod. With the reel locked up the original washers are pretty good but feel a few extra kg would be better. Will i get this out of carbontex washer upgrade.Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Yep
I did it to my old 14000FA but the upgrade is designed more to incearse the smoothness of the drag than increase the pressure.
Well worth $20 or so though

spheros and saragosa are
spheros and saragosa are both good for their simplicity, the gear boxes are easy to maintain and less problems can occur compared to other reels. From my experience they are also tanks so they should be rigid enough to handle decent kings. Enough big kings is sure to wear any reel's gears at the end of the day though

just note that the carbontex
just note that the carbontex washers will smoothen the drag at the higher settings only.
As a general rule felt is smother at lower settings and carbon at higher settings

It already has 20kg of drag
It already has 20kg of drag anymore and the fish will pull you in the water. Use the drag to wear the fish out rather than trying to skull drag it, that is what makes it fun. With 37 kg line you really should have the drag set at 12 kg anyways, 1/3 breaking strain of the line.

I also did the upgrade and I
I also did the upgrade and I only fish with 5 -7 kgs of drag pressure. Has the Spheros for 5 years and its as good as the day I purchased it and its caught a sh*tload of fish over the years. Great value for money reel.

Jetty rat god advice but ya
Jetty rat god advice but ya need to put the breaks on straight away on big kings especially where we fish for them untill ya get them in more open water then can back it off..These kings can be more than 30kg.I have mucked around with the reel and had a mate take a jog with the reel locked up and doubt the reel has 20kg of drag, feels more like 12 but i havnt tested it out on scales yet.I usally fish for them on live bait on 24 and 37kg tackle but got the spheros for popping and stick baits.I originally bought a saltiga 4500 for it but to my disbelive the first time i used it ever i hooked a thresher on it and got spooled on 50lb braid before i could even blink and the drag knob melted
so much for that reel haha.i fixed it and sold it not worth 900 bucks. Thanks for your replies guys ill get some carbontex washers it has a saragosa handle allready. And hopefully put it to the test.Looking forward to see what the new saragosa will look like..

hmmm sounds like the reel is
hmmm sounds like the reel is not doing its job propelry since 20kg is a hell of a lot. Not very good luck on the the reels there mate it sucks when shit like that happens especially when you pay 900 big ones just to have a melt. My $300 SOL broke its bail arm lastnight, when stuff like that happen you got to ask why these reels cost so damn much.

i guess that's spin reels
i guess that's spin reels for ya. There not like tiagras ect. A mate of mine just spent a week chasing gts on nomad charters and they had 2 18000 stellas fail. On one the spool was spinning on the shaft and reverse bearing went on the other.

I've done it to my 14000fa.
I've done it to my 14000fa. The felt ones disintegrate over time and make a bit of a mess.
Please also note when order them, the drag washers are different between the FA and FB.

Carbontex
Hi mate, Our reel servicer can put carbontex drag washers into all spinning and overhead reels. Just leave the reel with us and he can cut and fit carbontex drag washers to any reel. For spinning reels its only $27 which includes having it installed with Cals grease.
