Sharks from shore in the metro area.

Hi all,

I recently got back into fishing after being convinced to try live baits from shore. On my first attempt with a herring i got a decent tailor (better than I ever got in all the years i tried with mulies in my teens). Following this the same people who convinced me to try got me onto shark fishing, as is their passion. I spent most of summer with the same guys and between three of us we got 4 bronzies (all returned to swim another day) along with wobbies etc. A few of weeks back the place we fish from got closed off for maintenance (I think they are building a tiolet block or something) and the surrounding areas havent produced much.

I was wondering if this is a seasonal thing with fewer sharks around in winter or if anyone has any ideas for other areas to fish for sharks around perth?

Any advice is appreciated, cheers.

Adam

warnbro

Thu, 2009-05-07 20:48

towards the end of january this year i caught a 5 ft shark off  the beach at warnbro sound (about half way between safetybay and port kennedy) it had black tips on its fins, just like a blacktip reef shark, however i think there only caught up north and i think it might have been a "long nosed gray shark"- which also have black tips. caught it on a live herring at around 10 at night. however ive been fishing this beach for over 3 years and this was the first time ide even seen signs of shark life here   ( i think i fluked it). the only other spot which i can think of as being more shark renouned is woodmans point, and longpoint through to secret harbour (bronzeys)

umm during the summer there is sharks everywhere u can get them of any beach. but during the winter there is far fewer but if u know were to go u will still get them. woodmans point is my (and many others) fav spot. use a deep sea with a ballon with about 1.5m of wire trace and then just catch a scalie or talior there. there is ussaly people fishing for sharks there every night. the biggest i ahve seen landed was a 7ft hammerhead and a like 6ft bronzey but some times the sea lion steals ur sharks or bait so some people use sinkers and the also get rays and gummys and black tips

Spent a few hot nights down

Fri, 2009-05-08 10:14

Spent a few hot nights down at Wanbro earlier this year looking for sharks. We didnt use live baits as we couldnt catch anything big enough. Just hooked up Whole tuna heads/mullets with large circle hooks and cable ties. Sent them out under balloons or casting them out on non-return clips. We also Kayaked a few out, which was the best option.

We only hooked into monster rays and werent able to get them over the drop offs sadly. Lots of takes and long fights, but no sharks.

If any of you guys are keen for a mission, drop me a message.

Thanks everyone, lots of help!

I tried off hillareys marina north side the other night, not a spot i like, hard to catch any bait cuz of all the blowies, but its pretty close by. Finaly got a herring, put it out and hooked up a big ray within five minutes. Frustrating, took that long to catch a livie then it gets taken by a ray, i cant seem to escape those things.

Ill deffinately try some of the spots recomended, especially cott as its close.

 Cheers!!

heavy gear ... big baits.

Tue, 2009-11-10 18:52

heavy gear ... big baits. Circle hooks.

Depending on where i fish from i could be sending out out a livie on an sl30, dropping a big bait out with the kayak and using a pen 6/0. or casting out using a non-return clip on a 10 foot rod.

basic rig would be a 24kg Mainline, 100lb leader via double. then large ball bearing swivel onto 3m of 100lb plastic coated wire trace and large 12/0 Circle Hook. Also connected to the ball bearing swivel will be a coastlock swivel with a 1m length of 24 mono  and 6-8 ounce spider sinker. Preferably being able to kayak a bait out.

Anyone with a kayak??

Wed, 2009-11-11 18:56

Im keen to try this one day, i love tangling with the odd ray but a small(ish) shark would be a thrill!

As far as rods go, would you need a land based game type rod or would your average 10kg surf/rocks rod cut it? I was thinking a huge spooled banax reel or something to match up with my wilson rod. To increase line capacity id go a spool of 50lb braid top shot with 100m or so of mono then leader...

Am i on the right page gear wise?

Cheers,

Line capacity is big thing.

Wed, 2009-11-11 20:22

Line capacity is big thing. thats why overhead reels are usually used when actually targeting sharks. and not just hooking them on the odd occasion with the eggbeater + surfcaster ( expect the spool would empty quick with a standard reel)

Generally your bait will be out around the 100m mark, just past the first breakers or so. Then the first run may strip 50 or so metres before they wake up and take another 100.  So i would never try with anything less than 350m, braid can be very useful when smaller capacity reels are used. Drag is the next main thing as you will need to put the hurt on at some point. I know of 5 footer sharks to pull 8 kg of drag as if it was running in freespool. So, again.. big reels/big drag/big line capacity would the preference. No point in leaving a fish swimming around with 300ms of mono hanging out of its mouth.

Anyone keen for a mission in a few weeks time??? Im gonna stock up on a bit it gear, so could make a few traces up if you need them.

I'm no expert

Sat, 2009-11-14 18:48

But, when living in Vic I used to go beach fishing a lot, and would occasionally come back with some decent gummies and even a bronzie or thresher. I dont necesarily have a secret but what worked for me was get to your fishing ground early morning (if your planning on fishing afternoon, get there early morning to get bait fish and set your burley trail). So get there early morning 8-10 am or there abouts.

Have a hessian sack filled with pollard, tuna oil, fish frames and fish flesh tie a rope to the bag chuck the bag in the wash on shore and stake the other end down on the shore above the high tide line. Dig a few holes up the beach and throw some diced mulies in it. When the tide come up these will be washed out with the current... there's your burley trail.

Other than that... wait a while for the sharks.. but fish for whatever is around in the meantime. I havent done this method over here.. still looking for a good place to give it a try.

Anyway, hope that helps.

Cheers

Ryan

had a couple of good hookups

Wed, 2009-11-18 17:02

had a couple of good hookups to bronzies around trigg and north beach over the last couple of weeks, landed a small one yesterday but a big one busted me off on reef last week. maybe their chasing the tailor that are around atm so would be good to try livebaiting a decent tailor or a big fillet? Mullet has been working well for me though.

Also I'm a fan of burley buckets, seems to bring in rays as well though....

Hi all, I'm new to this site

Fri, 2009-11-20 18:27

Hi all, I'm new to this site and have found this subject very interesting. Just a couple of questions.

How do you handle a shark when its landed? The sucker is obviously not happy.

If you are going to fillet it, what do you do with the rest of the carcass? I mean, there is going to be a lot left over and you won't fit it in a wheelie bin!

What is the etiquitte for disposal of a carcass (fish not human)

Cheers

More Gear Questions

Wed, 2009-12-09 08:25

Cheers for the help.

Im pretty keen to get some gear together for this. What do people use? I mean actual rods and reels etc.

I dont see myself doing a whole lot of shark fishing so I dont want to spend a ton of cash. If the gear would be good for general boat fishing as well it would be worth a bit more to me... (I need some boat gear for exmouth next year probably)

Bungel, I do shift work so if I get my gear together Id be keen for the occasional sunday nighters especially.

 Cheers

Wed, 2009-12-30 13:51

Full Moon on the 1st of Januray... Im definatly gonna be giving somewhere a decent crack for a big toothy.

Anyone else free to meet up?? Im not too fussed on the location as most places would be new to me..

Friday: S/SE winds 20/25 knots shifting S/SW and strengthening to 20/30 knots
during the afternoon.

Preferably somewhere that could fish alright in that wind... wanbro is the only place i can really think that could work.. ballooning a bait off the point?

... and once again my plans have been killed. damn the family commitments!!!!

didnt do so good.

Sat, 2010-01-02 16:45

Had planned to meet up with Young_yakker, but he couldnt make it in the end.

Wasnt a very successful night with finding the fish.. no bites from anything decent. Was plagued by blowies down there - baits that i usually get to soak for 2-3 hours were gone within 30 mins.

The plan worked out well though, walked out to the point and set up with the last of the sunlight. Found it easy to float baits out with the wind directly behind me, tried big baits at 20m, 100m, 200m out. Berlied up heaps and had a nice oily slick heading right out to my bait, cubed up heaps but the blowies would have devoured them quick. Had ground baits out too, but they didnt last more than 5 mins. Metals wernt getting any action either, so no livies sent out.

Packed it in around 11pm. Still a few people fishing that dropoff in front of the carpark, nothing happening there either. Damn the blowies!! I recon bottom baits are the way to go, need to hit Ragbag up for some lessons on the non-return clips. Im also a bit suss about the lightsticks in the balloons, could be working against me having that bright light over my bait.

Will have to wait another few weeks before i give it another nudge, recon the northern beaches are holding better fish - from what people say.

Thu, 2010-01-14 01:39

thanks young yakker, can get the ones without weights at blue water in scabs, might just have keep adding split sinkers to those ones, prefer adding the sinkers to the clip instead of on the trace think that helps it slide better. Also im after like 10 ounce spider sinkers, I've heard u cant buy them in perth though is that right?

Had a go tonight from city beach, beautiful night for it and a friendly angler gave us some live bait he was gonna throw back. No sharks though, we only got into a MONSTER ray, biggest ive seen landed.

Gonna try again maybe on sunday, then hopefully fish a fair bit around the full on the 30th

Anyone else been out after them recently?

What model ray was it and when u say monster did u guy's take the wing span ? or a possible guess on weight/size ?       With the non-return slides u wont get any with weights and beads as no one  know's what u talking about - u'l need to import , iv got the contacts if u got numbers .......... these are the best u can get very solid 2mm thick , not these light weight princes slides one can get here , for now just add a 3/4oz ball sinker just under the slide on the bite trace about 5cm from the knot just use a crimp under the sinker - that technique works better through surf zones  .........     Cant help u with 10z sinkers , but if u want 8oz proper slide sinkers we can talk ...... as i make them when i get lead ....... !

smooth ray

Fri, 2010-01-15 01:40

the ray went roughly 1.25 metres across. pretty sure it was a smooth ray from the spots. Have never had so much trouble releasing a ray back into the water! The clip was absolutely destroyed afterwards so would deff be interested in some more heavy duty ones. Probably about 15 to 20... how much do they cost?

Cheers for the advice regarding the ball sinker, sounds like a great plan. When u say proper slide sinkers do u mean grapnel sinkers? had such a strong undercurrent the other night my 7oz didnt even nearly cut it... Might be a bit to do with my technique as well though im yet to master sliding

Fri, 2010-01-15 16:49

yeah mate thats what i mean ,but these sinkers legs are twice as long plus double the thickness ,  having a few issues getting the correct  spring steel so  i import or i would make my own slides , they not expensive and will only cost a few $'s each ...... its the bank charges that do's the damage. if we can get a big enough order together we should make a plan.

We should have a fish some time and i'l show u what iv got .

Those sinkers and slides sound great man, I can ask a mate as well and get a good number together for the slides i reckon. Got the ray on a herring, decent fight and then a mission getting it back into the water. U got any tips for releasing rays after getting them on the beach?

Thinkin of goin back to city beach groyne on sunday night, made up some rigs with the ball sinkers today so keen to try that. Would be good to have a fish some time mate!

Will see what number we can come  up with by the end of the w/end and i'l get the best price going !  i only use single hooks(snelled) , but a max of two hooks makes taking the hooks out simple - don't flip the ray as the bigger fish are females and carry live young, these young will stab her and end up killing her with protein poison  leave it on its belly stick your hands under and remove the hooks - once removed put your hand in its mouth and just drag her across the wet sand, pls dont stick your fingers in its spiricals (there "gills") as thats the same as sticking your fingers into some ones lungs   - just watch the tail - more the barb as it go's in easy , but getting it out is a  serious problem !

All rays have molar mouths so they cant hurt  u - except a spearnose ray which is found in SA , has a serious mouth of teeth to watch out for.

Anyone up for a fish

Sun, 2010-01-24 13:33

Anyone up for a fish tomorrow???, could do early morning or evening.

Ive got a heap of burly i need to get rid of, as i didnt use as much bait up north as i expected. Damn the crappy weather and lack of fish!@

... keen to get out somewhere tomorrow and use it all, open for ideas.

Are there some rocky ledges around that would suit cubing up of pilchards to bring the fish in. ???

bait

Mon, 2010-01-25 17:47

Been doin some reading and the south africans seem to love whole squid (Chokka?) as shark bait. Schecky u mentioned getting one on squid, anyone else has much luck using them?

Just found a vid for preparing a mackerel and squid bait for sliding

swim baits

Tue, 2010-01-26 19:06

mate u think thats good bait - must try swim baits , these little bronzies that are caught in the metro make perfect live bait - there just doesnt seem to be anything out in the metro big enough to eat one .    Iv seen a 70kg diamond ray used as a swim bait , targeting sharks , and was taken by a 70kg bronzie . - the bigger the bait the bigger the fish , when it comes to shark fishing.

Yeah works a treat, as James

Mon, 2010-02-08 21:14

Yeah works a treat, as James said, we use em on 7/0 snells.

We found it HAS to be fresh or you won't get nearly as many runs...as in caught within 24 hours.

Have to be honest though we weren't targeting sharks in particular hence the absence of wire(used 60lb Jinkai plus)...lucky I use circles as I pinned the big fella in the corner of the jaw.

we used to buy little 2 inch

Tue, 2010-01-26 19:13

we used to buy little 2 inch squid that had been pumped full of a sturdy berly, they definatly do the trick when straylining off the rocks. small 1/4 ounce ball sinker on the top to get them headin down the water slowly and releasing the burly on the way.

Bonito or Skip jack tuna are very good for that reason, they create there own burly of oils and soft flesh. Would prefer that out there as a shark bait over most else.

bait

Tue, 2010-01-26 22:26

wow that is insane bout the swim baits ragbag! Ive been using whole mullet (aprox 500gm) for slide baits but might swap to bonito as suggested.

There a top bait because of the oily texture and soft flesh - but thats also the downfall as the peckers love them just as much ! Iv used a lady's stocking pulled tight over the baits to try keep the rats at bay , this helps to a certain extent un till crabs get hold of it ...... whole mullet is a fantastic bait - use it whole as the scales protect it - just stab the gill plates or make a flap bait for a quicker release of flavor !

mullet

Wed, 2010-01-27 20:35

yea the mullet has been good, didnt think about the pickers destroying bonito, heaps of crabs in most of the places i fish. used to use mullet fillets before i was sliding the baits, what do u mean by a flap bait?

cheers

mullet

Thu, 2010-01-28 21:34

mate cut up the back bone from the tail to half way up to the  head - like u would when u filleting a fish - stop just before the stomach - remove the back bone - fold one fillet over the head of the mullet and wrap tightly with cost cotton - let the other fillet hang there - it gets a bit of movement in the water(flaps) and lets the flavor out ..... u can slide these baits or just use them as throw baits - depending on the size of bait u got .

G'day Ragbag,
Have you got any of those 8oz Grapnels lying around that you wouldn't mind selling? Can only find the smaller models in the local tackle stores, and their not really up to anchoring a big bait.

season

Sat, 2010-03-13 23:09

we put in a solid effort on friday night n picked up a nice bronzie about 1.6m no record but a decent fish.

How long do ppl reckon before the sharks dissapear again? Final shark we picked up last summer was mid april, then nothing after that.

Im not that fussed, looking forward to targetting some big rays anyway but just wondering what other people think? a few weeks left?
