Sharks from shore in the metro area.

Hi all,

I recently got back into fishing after being convinced to try live baits from shore. On my first attempt with a herring i got a decent tailor (better than I ever got in all the years i tried with mulies in my teens). Following this the same people who convinced me to try got me onto shark fishing, as is their passion. I spent most of summer with the same guys and between three of us we got 4 bronzies (all returned to swim another day) along with wobbies etc. A few of weeks back the place we fish from got closed off for maintenance (I think they are building a tiolet block or something) and the surrounding areas havent produced much.

I was wondering if this is a seasonal thing with fewer sharks around in winter or if anyone has any ideas for other areas to fish for sharks around perth?

Any advice is appreciated, cheers.

Adam

not much bigger mate, still

Wed, 2010-08-11 13:44

not much bigger mate, still trying to break the 2m mark. Learnt heaps last summer though about sliding baits and using very long heavy mono (aprox 3-5m of 1mm tough trace) above the steel trace or connecting to the stopper if your sliding.

Over all of last summer we had 2 HUGE sharks just destroy us, one tiger for sure and one suspected tiger. Hopefully this year ill have the experience and gear to land them.

Cant remember where the one im talking about was caught mate, was a fair while ago. prob around north beach, trigg or city beach though.

I use circles on lockweld

Wed, 2010-08-11 17:27

I use circles on lockweld plastic coated wire. about 100lb (about 2 -3 metres) and balloon out a whole blue mackie on an overhead outfit.

I know a lot of people use small rays for hammerheads, but there is a video on youtube of guys going for white pointers. They use the same method^^ and they seem to land some big pointers ahah. worth a watch

I find I get a lot more hits on live baits slid out on non return clips.
Also I think its illegal to target white pointers now isnt it? have tried small rays as swim baits, never had much luck, might try it when i finally get up to exmouth though

do you use two circles or one on the mackie mate?

Also, have you ever had issues with the nylon coated wire? I have swapped back and forward a couple of times now?

cheers

Yeh 2 circles, i know a lot

Thu, 2010-08-12 17:18

Yeh 2 circles, i know a lot of people use just the one, but I dont trust it haha

Uhm yeh lockweld plastic coated is good. Just tie and melt. I havent had any issues with it, I rekon its the bees knees haha.

Because your using circles, i dont think you would have a problem being bit off at 100lb say, although, you might have some problems with the monsters out there

last summer me and the boi's

Thu, 2010-08-12 13:24

last summer me and the boi's managed 47 sharks from the metro area mostly woodmans point and north mole

mostly bronzies and blacktip arong the 4 to 5 foot range n after the first initial run they pretty much can be reeled straight in with a few head shakes on the way with little if any fight,

hammerheads on the otherhand are much more fun they are a great fight on 10kg

also managed 1 tiger shark of 6 foot landed and also managed to get a 8 - 9 foot one to the pier but was too powerful for 10 kg line and wrapped my mates line around the pylon.

also hooked sharks on balloons that were just too big on 15kg and 24kg and would just spool us straight to rotto

a dead 30 cm tailor or bigger was the choice and blue mackies.

i got a 9-10 foot tiger off the rocks at geraldton earlier this year on 15kg wich was a memorable moment will post a pic of that one later tonight wen i get home, for those who havent seen it.

bronzies arent bad mate, but

Thu, 2010-08-12 17:46

bronzies arent bad mate, but I have stopped keeping them. Kept the first couple and got a nice set of jaws out of one, but i reckon if I was gonna target a shark for food it would just be wobbies if you call them a shark lol, love them for a feed! Havent tried hammers, though heard they are ok and i certainly wouldnt keep a tiger

this one was caught near the crayfish dock on the ocean side in geraldton earlier this year on 15kg
im 6'2 so figure the rest and couldnt tell you how much it weight but i couldnt lift it any higher than that, im purely catch and release when it comes to sharks over the 4-5 foot range not only that theres a size limit too most whaler shark now that i believe is 70cm between the front of the dorsal to the rear secondary dorsal.

i remember a while back we always use to get a few gummies off the end of woodman pt rock wall, (the one next to the boat ramp) great eating too..!

I got one end of last year just out Leighton on the boat while fishing for whiting. Wasn't all big, around 1.5m, but good eating, and fun on light gear aha

so if i understood the concept correct its to get the big bait out far by first casting the huge sinker then letting it grab onto something and then that clip is to slide the bait to the sinker.

Hey dicey you get a stopper ring when u buy non return clips...

Sinker-------(1.5m 20lb)-------Stopper ring-----Mainline (Higher strength than Sinker to ring)
