Seaswirl 2301 w/a or Boston Whaler 235 Conquest for north west?

I am looking to import a boat from the US and looking to spend about $30-40k USD on the boat. I was nearly sold on a 2006 Seaswirl 2301 W/A but then did some research on the Boston Whaler 235 and 255 Conquest. Any suggestions?

Boston is a much better boat -that said it would be an old one for 35-40 US whereas you will get a good late model seaswirl for those dollars

"Seaswirl" here on the forum

"Seaswirl" here on the forum has done this excersice with a Boston Whaler, we fished from it at the Exmouth comp.Have a yap to him before getting one from the USA.

I think from what he told me your budget is way too small if this is the total to be spent mentioned above.

255 is a big boat so be aware

Wed, 2011-05-04 08:48

255 is a big boat so be aware that you will need more than a Cruiser/Patrol to 'Adequately' tow it (ie Fully loaded). The 235 is a great boat, a mate had one with twin 150 etecs here in Karratha and it handled to sea very well. (28-30 knots comfortably travelling side on in a 25-30knot easterly).

The Seaswirl is a great boat as well, but as mentioned, you may struggle a little with quality options with the Budget you've outlined.

Either way, both are great boats.

Good luck.

I think he means the initial

I think he means the initial cost of the boat in the states. He will need to factor in a lot more to get it here though.

By the way we love our Seaswirl, bloody good boat and pretty economical with the diesel.

Cheers

 Thanks. I am leaning towards

Thanks. I am leaning towards the Seaswirl. I am hoping to purchase the boat for or under $40k US + all the import costs and GST. I have heard that the Boston Whalers that are in that price range have timber frames which could lead to wood rot. The Seaswirls dont. They appear to be lighter as well. I have seen a few 2006 2301 W/A Seaswirls for under $40k purchase price. Works out pretty good compared to a buy over here at the moment.

I have been looking at doing

Fri, 2011-05-06 23:39

I have been looking at doing the same thing and importing from the US. The bostons are just awesome but so expensive compared to the other boats but they definatly hold there value well from what i have seen. Would it be fair to say you are budgeting about 10k USD for roll on roll off to aus ?

Just a couple of others:

Trophy 2302wa

Polar 2300

Robalo 235

There is heaps in that price range, the best advice on a lot of these boats is one : http://www.thehulltruth.com/

Commercial posts...

Tue, 2011-08-23 01:20

Hi Sarcasm,
I will be periodically offering what I hope is helpful info along the way - I will try my hardest NOT to post any commercial offerings.
I know this is an enthusiast site and will respect the users (and Administration) of the site.

I think there may be one post on here that I wrote about the type of boats that will soon be hitting Aussie shores, which, I guess is a promo .. As I said, I will refain from any further.

I'm hoping to get to the stage where I will eventually be able to take out paid-sponsorship of some of this sites' pages in an unobtrusive manner and contribute to the site's success.

Thanks and just let me know personally if you ever think that anything I post is going too far.

Best regards to all on here,

Darren

$40k plus costs is realistic,

Mon, 2011-08-22 09:17

$40k plus costs is realistic, I was thinking you meant $40k all up.

As a rule of thumb, it seems that a fairly reliable estimate is to add 80% to your purchase price if you are importing one: by the time you pay for new trailer, quarantine, GST, shipping, customs broker fees, registration costs, stamp duty on trailer, rego on boat, rego on trailer, fitting HIN plate to boat etc.

You can get lucky and have it come in under, but if you budget 80%, then assuming the boat is as described and there is nothing wrong with it at all (which itself is rare) then you should be at or under budget.

Better to come in less than you were expecting than more!

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
