Rod suggestion OH

 G'day lads

ive just for myself a new penn squall 60ld for some lb fishing mainly off jetties and rockwalls. I'm in need of a rod! looking at something like live fibre lbg in a few months time but at the moment just looking for something cheap ($75 max) that I can thrash in the mean time. Any suggestions? Also any opinions in how I should spool it up? Looking at maybe filing with 50lb braid plus 50 meters of mono topshot around 50lb aswell.

Cheers lads any suggestions welcome

If your looking at getting

If your looking at getting the live fibre LBG then I'm guessing you don't plan on casting so any cheap OH boat rod will be fine in the mean time. Plenty to be found on gumtree, bcf or any of the site sponsors.

If you are planning on casting, which you wont be doing very far with the live fibre LBG there aren't really any rods available in that price range that I've seen. The cheapest I came across was the shimano catana which was around $100 but I think they've been discontinued and they wern't even readily available before that. Next best option is the penn prevail which is an excellent rod for the price and has landed many sharks both by myself and other fishwrecked members.

50lb good quality low diameter braid backing is fine and the top shot will depend on how your fishing, if your sliding you'll need atleast a 100m but you'll lose distance with 50lb mono, if ballooning/casting 50m should be fine. My two ballooning/sliding reels have around 200m of 30lb mono and as much 50lb backing as possible, choosing good quality braid and mono will get you much better capacity than using the cheap ebay shit.

live fibre

I have the live fibre LBG and I have also used some shorter rods say 7ft.  I mainly chase pelagics gas ballooning with the live fibre and have hooked a few sharks in excess of 3m and they start to be a real pain on this rod due to it being 10ft long.  If I was getting a rod for only chasing sharks and you dont need the extra reach for say cliff fishing I would go with a short stroker maybe stick with the live fibre ones as they are good rods.  With the shorter rod you can put more hurt on the fish.

I picked up a catana on clearance for $70 that will be fine for the mean time.

Another cheap OH rod I forgot

Tue, 2013-11-05 23:17

Another cheap OH rod I forgot to mention is the pflueger crank which a NOR store had for around $80 (managers special not floor stock) a few months ago, I can't comment on the quality of them however but the crank rods did get a good review from Oceanside tackle.

Also forgot to mention that when I was ordering my live fibre lbg last week a guy at the store recommended not trying to cast with it as he had heard of a few people damaging the blank in the process (I think this was specific to newer models or stock but I'm not sure).

Cheers for the help lads. I wasn't intending on casting to be honest I'd rather kayak the baits out its a bit more reliable. Anyone had a look at the squalls before? I've heard good reviews so hopefully it goes alright on some sharks !
