Rod and reel advice
Submitted by Justo82 on Mon, 2012-10-08 21:51
I'm looking to get another rod to add to the collection. I have my bream rod, my 8-12kg snapper rod, and my 15-25kg overhead combos.
I want something for bottom bashing, trolling, jigging etc. my current overheads are star drag. And quite frankly shit.
Im thinking I should be getting something around the 15kg rating, overhead, with a lever drag. I'm guessing level wind. Do I want a roller tip or standard guides?
ive got about $200ish for rod and reel. Plus braid.
What rod/reel would you opt for and what line?
cheers folks

Don't use roller tips with braid because it can get caught and rip the tip straight off the rod! It all depends on what your going to use it for mainly? Unfortunately I don't know of many lever drag level winds? Is it $200 for both the rod and reel combo or $200 each on each?

Two reels that spring to
Two reels that spring to mind are the Shimano Charter special and the Penn Fathom. The Shimano is basically a TLD 15 with a level wind and I have heard very good feedback on the Fathom reels. Penn have really got their stuff together in recent years.
To get one of these and a rod for $200 though will be a little tricky but if you want something decent you may need to stretch your budget a little further.
Don't be too put off by buying a decent narrow spool jigging style overhead. You will be able to manage line lay pretty reasonably with these types of reels. Maybe a Daiwa Saltist 30 hyper speed or normal speed version or a Penn Squall.
Plenty of other options I could mention but your budget makes it a little hard!

The tld for $189 looks like a bargain. I may need to invest in that.
