Penn vs Shimano vs Okuma

G'day all,

Looking at a new toy and am thinking of something in the 50W range of overheads.   After thoughts and experiences between the Tiagra (Shimano), International (Penn) and Makaira (Okuma).

Regards

 Ford v holden - Patrol v

 Ford v holden - Patrol v landcruiser,

A the top end range i think it`s more personel preferance, i have internationals my brother loves his tiagra`s both quality reels, Tiagra`s ratchet is louder and can be heard easier from the wheel house on bigger boats, which is an advantage.

Cheers Boomer

Penn

I prefere penn just because we have had them in our family for 22years and they still run absolutely perfectly!!! They are built thought and they have a more durable drag system. But it depends on personal preference.

Hi Spanish,

More just trying to limit the degree of confusion.  Do you have an opinion on these vs the other three listed?

Unfortunately not, haven't

Unfortunately not, haven't had enough time using any of these reels to recommend one, just curious as the daiwa option doesnt often come up in these talks.

PS if it was me i would go with what Alan Tani recommends.

Always interested in real life experiences rather than the fanboy fanatical followers!  I'll have a look at Alan's recommendations and see where I end up!

Got a little 12year old voice in my ear saying Shimano with Fins braid .... It's what Paul uses!  Gotta love commercial TV.

ohh gosh! Kills me to think

Thu, 2012-10-18 20:59

ohh gosh! Kills me to think of the amount of people with cash to burn fishing with a stella 20k with 80lb braid, for fish that would be more enjoyable/sporting with a 8k or 5k. But choose the 20k just because "its what Paul uses"...

Anyway i'll stop there, have a read of the link posted below, and if you want to save a bit of coin there's an Inter 50VSW in the for sale section.

Alan Tani's rating

The link below maybe of interest if you haven't already read it.  He rates various makes of reel at the bottom.

The Makairas are getting

Sun, 2012-10-21 23:43

The Makairas are getting heaps of good press, still wasn't enough to make me buy one just food for thought, out of the three I'd buy the cheapest, I do have a Fin nor santiago 30w that seems to be cutting the mustard at the moment, need a bit more time and a few more fish to really rate it's durability though, out of the box it feels and fishes great.

I just bought a Penn 50VSW

Mon, 2012-10-22 07:24

I just bought a Penn 50VSW after going through this decision making process.

Mine will be used for standup fishing for Marlin out of Cairns.

For me it was down to Penn or Shimano.  From what I read the Makaira's are as good if not better, however they are also dearer and if I'm honest I still can't get past the Okuma stigma.

I chose the Penn as it is about half a kg lighter than the Tiagra, and I found one about $100 cheaper than the best Tiagra deal I could find on the net.  Also on a purely cosmetic note I like the Penn gold colour better than the Shimano shade.

As for the reel, well I've only just finished putting line on it but very happy with my choice.  Love it.
